As you do so, you’ll get to view the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest, and several others. But many more waits in Bhutan for you to explore. As the plane descent, the panoramic view of Bhutan’s foothills will excite you no end but the real thrill is the landing in Paro International airport, considered one of the world’s most difficult airports to put plane on land.
As you alight and get out of the airport, our guide will be there well in advance to greet you and take you to the hotel for lunch. Right on that afternoon, you’ll be taken for a sightseeing around the Paro valley, which is a treasure trove of natural beauty, historical monuments, agricultural farms and quintessentially Bhutanese village communities. Few places to visit are the National Museum, formerly a watchtower, and then the Paro Rinpung Dzong. A leisure stroll around Paro town.

On our way back, we will stop by our next destination, the Memorial Chorten. It is a huge stupa in the middle of the city which was built in fond memory of Third king of Bhutan the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
Then we will drive to visit the 12th century Changangkha Temple, located on a small hilltop that again provides great view of the town. In Motithang is the Takin Zoo where a unique animal is housed in a zoo. The Takin is the national animal of Bhutan. Believed to have been created by the divine force of Lam Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as Divine Madman, it looks more like combination of antelope and a cow. After the visit there, we drive up to the viewpoint at Sangaygang. Distance: 77 kilometres, Time: 3 hours
Highlights: A panoramic view of the snow-capped eastern Himalayas and a multitude of alpine flowers and birds; Bhutan’s ancient capital and Temple of Fertility.
Drive from Thimphu to Punakha/Wangdue will take us three to four-hour drive. The road passes through a constantly changing kaleidoscope of vegetation, waterfalls, flowers, mountains and meadows. The landmark feature for the journey is the famous Dochula pass (3,100m) where on a clear day we can see the entire eastern Himalayan range, teeming with 6,000m to 7,554m snow-capped mountains. The pass also known for its abundant species of extremely beautiful flowers has 108 Buddhist stupas exquisitely built around a mound, adding to the natural splendor of the place.
After a stopover at Dochula, we descend to the sub-tropical valley of Punakha. Punakha served as the ancient capital of Bhutan and still possesses the country’s main treasures in the form of Buddhist relics. Resembling a gigantic ship on an ocean floor from afar, and girdled by two (Male and Female) rivers, the castle-fortress also represents the best specimen of Bhutanese architecture.
After lunch in a small place nearby village together with a rural farming household, we will walk along a footpath flanked by an endless view of ripening paddy fields to the Temple of Fertility - Chimi Lhakhang. This temple, built in the 15th century to honour the “Divine Madman”, a saint iconoclast who is also associated with phallus worship, attracts barren couples from all over to receive fertility blessings from an anointed phallus. Than drive further to Punakha and stop at the views point the confluence of Male (Pho chu) and female (Mo chu) rivers and visit the Punakha Dzong, later visit the Sangchen Lhendrup Nunnery monastery.

Highlights: Hike to the Tiger’s Lair, the most famous Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas, built on a sheer rock face.
The day begins with a breakfast, after which we drive half an hour till where the road end towards Taktshang monastery, a temple pasted on sheer face of cliff. From there, we hike up to the temple that is flocked by tourist and local alike since it is renowned in the Himalayan Buddhist world as one of the most popular sites of pilgrimage. The round trip on foot along the ancient path, roofed the tall Pine and Oak trees takes five-hour. And the view, once on top is enthralling, with whole Paro valley in one frame and airport runaway a small strip of black tarmac a prominent feature.
Taktshang is a temple, precariously perched on a hair-raising ravine about 1,000 metres above the valley floor. It is considered sacrosanct as it was in a cave within this temple that the eight century tantric saint, Padmasambhava, subdued the evils who obstructed the teachings of the Buddha. The saint is believed to have flown to Taktshang in a fiery wrathful form riding a tigress. Over the years, many Buddhist saints have meditated in and around the temple and discovered numerous hidden treasure teachings.
As we return, we can visit the ruins of Drugyel Dzong en route which is being renovated to its former glory. Drugyel can be translated as the “Castle of the Victorious Drukpa”, and was built to celebrate Bhutan’s victory over the Tibetan invasions in the 17th and 18th centuries. From there, we can also get to see the sacred mt. Jumolhari, one of the highest mountain of Bhutan in its background. Finally, before we drop back to hotel, we can stopover in Kyichu Lhakhang which was built way back in 7th century.
