Cherrapunji, also spelled as Cherrapunjee, is a well-known town located in the Indian state of Meghalaya. The meaning of its name in the local language means 'the land of oranges'. This region came into existence in the early 16th-century and was ruled by the Khyiems of the Khasi tribals. Today, it is reckoned amid the must-visit places in Meghalaya.
Cherrapunji is surrounded by the beautiful hills of Khasi and is elevated at a height of 4,869 feet above the sea level. There are different other valleys that are bedecked with the tantalizing forests where different wild species reside. The land of Cherrapunji unrolls over vast acres of land. The climate of its region is described as a tropical monsoon climate. It receives heavy rain showers for the major part of the year. During the rest part of the year, it encounters a pleasant weather and the average mercury levels range between 19°C-27°C.
