The annual Black-Necked Crane festival is celebrated at the courtyard of Gangtey Goempa in Phobjikha valley. The festival is an occasion for the locals to rejoice and celebrate the arrival of this endangered and majestic bird which becomes an inseparable part of their daily lives during the winter months.
The annual black-necked crane festival is organized to generate awareness and understanding on the importance of conserving the endangered Black‐Necked cranes. The festival includes cultural programs such as folk songs and dances (some with black-necked crane themes) and mask dances performed by the local people, crane dances and environmental conservation-themed dramas and songs by school children.

Day 1 : Arrive Paro - Thimphu
The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world with a constantly changing panorama of some of the highest mountains on earth. Our representative will be there to receive you as you exit Paro airport following customs formalities. Upon warm greetings by offering the scarf, our team will then take you to taste some of the local delicate for lunch at one of the popular restaurants at Paro.
After lunch,
- You will embark on leisure afternoon sightseeing around Paro with a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum which houses many religious relics, works of art and handicrafts offering a great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past.
- Followed by a visit to Paro Rinpung Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered as the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment in a lifetime. Paro Dzong is the central administrative and monastic body of the Paro District. It is also a venue for one of the popular festival in the country known as Paro Tshechu.
- And a drive to the capital, Thimphu following the Pachu River. Our team will share you an information on Bhutanese etiquette before you check in your hotel. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 2 : Thimphu Sightseeing
Morning,
- You will embark on a leisurely hour-long nature walk to the 18 Century Wangditse monastery situated atop Thimphu. From the monastery, you can get the spectacular view Trashichoe Dzong, The National Assembly, and whole Thimphu valley. On your way back from Wangditse, stop by the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the Takin, Bhutan’s National Animal.
- Followed by a visit to Thimphu Changangkha Lhakhang. This fortress-like temple is perched on a ridge above central Thimphu which hums with pilgrim activity. It is traditionally popular among the parents with newborns.
They come here to get auspicious names for their newborns or blessings for their young children from the protector deity Tamdrin. You too can get an auspicious name for your children from this temple. Our team Will then take you for a lunch
Afternoon,
- Then visit the Centennial Farmers Market, where the farmer from all the district of Bhutan come to sell their agriculture and farming products. You will get to see the different products available in Bhutan.
- Followed by a visit to Folk Heritage Museum, a living museum of rural life which provides
- And with evening a visit to the massive Trashi Choe Dzong. This splendid Dzong, north of the city on the west bank of the Wang Chhu, seems to fit seamlessly into the valley, lending the city both regal splendor and monastic weight. The Dzong was the site of the lavish formal coronation of the fifth king in 2008 and hosts the country biggest annual festival known as Tsechu festivities. It hosts the Office of the King, Prime Minister, Some Ministry and religious body of Thimphu district. It is also a summer residence of the Je Khenpo. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 3 : Thimphu - Punakha,
After Breakfast,
- Our team will drive to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. Enroute our team will stop for you at Dochula pass (3,100 meters) for you to have an incredible panoramic view of Himalayan peaks. In the Dochu-La area, there are vast Rhododendron forests that grow to tree size and bloom in late April/early May covering the mountains in a riot of glorious spring color.
- Followed by a leisure walk to Chimi Lhakhang the temple of Devine Madman Drukpa Kuenley. He is a popular figure in the history of Bhutan since he revolted against the orthodox Buddhism in his time. He taught the people that religion is an inner feeling and it’s not necessary that one should be an ordained monk. He is also considered a symbol of fertility and most childless couples go to his temple for blessing. Our team will then take you for a lunch either at Punakha or Lobesa depending upon the time.
After lunch,
- Visit Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness”. It is arguably one of the most beautiful dzongs in the country built at the confluence of the two major rivers Mo Chu (Female River) and Pho Chu (Male River). It is a breathtaking example of traditional Bhutanese architecture and serves as the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks who move en masse from Thimphu to this warmer location. It was here in 1907 that Bhutan’s first king was crowned. (Overnight at Punakha)
Day 4 : Punakha - Gangtey - Phobjikha
After Breakfast,
- Our team will drive you to Wangduephodrang to explore the bustling market town of Wangdue followed by a drive up a winding mountain road through oak and rhododendron forests, and over a high pass down into the wide and picturesque Phobjikha valley.
Phobjikha is one of Bhutan’s few glacial valleys and chosen winter home of black-necked cranes (November-March) migrating from the Tibetan plateau. The valley is one of the most beautiful in Bhutan. You will have your lunch at Phobjikha.
After Lunch,
- Visit Gangtey Goempa (Monastery), the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan and explore Phobjikha Valley with time to view the Black-Necked Cranes. These great birds are known as Thrung Thrung in Bhutan and feed along the marshy Phobjikha valley. There are said to be only 1600 of the birds in the world, of which about 400-500 come to Bhutan in November and stay until March. The beauty of the Cranes has given rise to many Myths, legends, Folktales, and songs. (Overnight at Phobjikha)
Day 5 : Gangtey - Phobjikha
After Breakfast,
- Attend the Black-Necked Crane Festival. The festival features numerous cultural programs organized by the local community. These include students performing the crane dance and small stalls offering many colorful local items such as yak tail dusters, butter teacups, turquoise and also different Bhutanese handicrafts for sale.
- This will also be ample time to view the Black Necked Cranes, visit the Information Centre and enjoy some of the many nature trails throughout the valley. (Overnight at Phobjikha)
Day 6 : Gangtey - Phobjikha - Thimphu
After breakfast,
- Drive to Thimphu with Enroute a visit to Semtokha Dzong, the oldest Dzong built by the unifier of the country known as Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
- Followed by a visit to Visit Kuenselphodrang (commonly known as Buddha Point) where the largest Buddha statue in the country is perched on the hillock overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Enjoy the magnificent view of Thimphu Valley and mountain peak
- And walk around the town for Last minute shopping and souvenirs back to home. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 7 : A Day Hike to Paro Taktshang
After Breakfast,
- Drive to Paro for a hike to Paro Taktshang.
Taktshang Monastery is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark and religious site. The name Taktshang translates to “The Tiger’s Nest”. This monastery is one of the holiest sites in the kingdom and clings impossibly to a sheer cliff face 2952 feet above the Paro Valley. Taktshang was first built in 1692 at a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 7th century A.D. No trip to Bhutan would be complete without a visit to this remarkable heritage site. You will stop for refreshment at the View Point Cafeteria. Then walk further up to the monastery. After visiting the monastery, you will come back for lunch at the viewpoint cafeteria.
- In the afternoon, visit 7th Century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples constructed by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo followed by a traditional hot stone bath and Dinner at one of the popular eco-lodges in the middle of the farmhouse. (Overnight at Paro)

- Alternatively, day 10 could be spent on a day trip to the Haa Valley, one of the most picturesque districts in Bhutan. Reached via the beautiful Chelela Pass, Haa Valley is characterized by its surrounding rugged and mountainous terrain. (Overnight at your hotel in Paro)
Day 8 : Depart Paro
