Jomolhari Trek is longer than the Jomolhari Loop. It is the most popular trekking routes in Bhutan. With altitude differences of 2,500m and nearly 5,000m, it offers a wide range of landscapes, fauna, and flora. Day 1 : Arrival At Paro International Airport
Upon arrival at Paro International airport, a representative from our company will be there to receive you as you exit the Paro international airport. Upon warm greetings and our team will welcome you by offering the scarf. Our team will then take you to one of the finest restaurants in Paro for a Lunch served in a finest Bhutanese dishes.
After lunch,
- Visit Ta Dzong (built in 1656 and renovated in 1968), an ancient watchtower which now houses the National Museum. Followed by a visit to the Rinpung Dzong (literally meaning “Heap of Jewels”) built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal below the museum. The dzong is the center of civil and religious authority in this valley. And by a walk around the Paro town for you to get a glimpse of traditional Bhutanese Urban (Overnight at Paro)
Day 2 : Hike to Taktsang Monastery/tiger’s Nest (acclimatization)
Our team will take you to the trailhead to commence a climb through beautiful pine forest to Taktshang Monastery (Tigers nest), one of the most outstanding settings in Bhutan.
Set on a vertical cliff face at 3100m above sea level, it defies all engineering logic. For the energetic, hike 2 hours up to get a more dramatic view of the monastery. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in 747 AD, flew here on the back of a flying tiger from Kurtoe Singye Dzong in the east. On returning, you will stop at Taktshang cafeteria for lunch.
After lunch,
- Walk down the base from where our team will take you to visit Drukgyal Dzong. Although it is now under renovation, the travelers are allowed to visit. This Dzong has great historical importance for the people of Bhutan. It was a place where the Bhutanese finally defeated the Tibetan invasion. On a clear day, one can view sacred Mt. Jomolhari (mountain of Goddess).
- Followed by a hot stone bath and dinner at one of the popular restaurant known as eco-lodge in the middle of the farmhouse. Our team will then drop you at your hotel for a rest (Overnight at Paro)
Day 3 : Gunitsawa Village - Sharna Zampa, 40mins, 80 M Descent, Camp Altitude 2,850 M
This trek begins at Gunitsawa Village where you will pass the army check post. The officials will check your trek permit (provided by your tour operator) and endorse the permit. The campsite is on the opposite side of the river, not far from Gunitsawa. (Overnight camp)
Day 4 : Sharna Zampa - Thang Thangkha, 22 Km, 7-8 Hr., 770 M Ascent, 10 M Descents, 3,610 M
The trail continues with lots of minor ascend and descend. After going uphill through the river valley, the valley finally narrows gradually to a mere path which descends to a meadow where a camp will be set up. From here, if weather permits, you will have the first great view of Mt. Jomolhari. (Overnight camp)
Day 5 : Thang Thangkha - Jangothang, 19 Km, 5-6 Hours, 480 M Ascent, Camp Altitude 4,080 M
If you did not see Mt. Jomolhari the previous evening, you will still have a chance to get a great view early this morning.
The trek continues up the Paro Chhu valley which widens into patches of alpine meadow and scanty growths of forest. You will cross an army checkpoint along the way and enjoy a spectacular view of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. In this area yaks and their herder’s homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Passing the villages Soe, Takethang and Dangochang is another asset on this day. After reaching Jangothang one of the most beautiful campsites of the Himalayas, you will again have a spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari. (Overnight camp)
Day 6 : Jangothang Halt
The rest day in Jangothang provides plenty of possibilities for day hikes with great views of lakes and snowcapped mountains such as Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. There are good chances to spot some blue sheep on the upper slopes of the valley. Jangothang is a perfect environment for your acclimatization.
You can also trek up to Tosoh or hike around the area. There are good short hiking trails in three directions. Jomolhari and its subsidiary mountain chains lie directly west, Jichu Drake to the north and there are a number of unclimbed peaks to the east. (Overnight camp)
Day 7 : Jangothang - Lingshi, 16km, 6-7 Hours, 810m Ascent, 1,090m Descent, Camp 3,800m
The trail leads to the last settlement in the valley and drops to the Paro Chhu. Passing the lake of Tshophu (4,380m) you will climb up steeply to Bhonte La pass (4,890m), the highest point of this trek route. Reaching the Dhumzo Chhu River, you will trek downstream passing the few houses of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo) to arrive at your camp soon after. (Overnight camp)
Day 8 : Lingshi - Shodu, 22km, 8-9 Hours, 940m Ascent, 920m Descent, Camp 4,080m
The trail climbs up to the Yelila pass at an altitude of 4,930m. From the pass, on a clear day, you will get an excellent view of Jomolhari, Tsherimgang, and Masangang. The trek from the pass to the campsite at Shodu is a steep downhill. (Overnight camp)
Day 9 : Shodu - Barshong, 16km, 5-6 Hours, 250m Ascent, 670m Descent, Camp 3,710m
The trail follows the Thimphu Chhu through rhododendron forests, past beautiful waterfalls along the way. The valley narrows till the path takes to the slopes and gradually ascends to the ruins of Barshong Dzong. (Overnight camp)
Day 10 : Barshong - Dolam Kencho, 15km, 4-5hours, 290 M Ascents, 640 M Descents, Camp 3,320m
The trail descends down to the Thimphu Chhu river valley, through dense forests of rhododendron, birch, conifer, maples, and bamboos and then ascends to pasture lands. The camp is in a meadow. (Overnight camp)
Day 11 : Dolam Kencho - Dodena (thimphu), 8km, 3-4 Hours, 500 M Ascents, 930 M Descents
The trail continues through forested areas winding up and down and through a small pass. Languor’s (monkeys) can be seen along the way. In Dodena, you will exit the Jigme Dorji National Park and reach the road head next to an impressive cantilever bridge. The trek finishes at the beautiful Cherri Monastery, while it is a 40 min hike to the monastery it is well worth it. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 12 : Thimphu Sightseeing
Our team will drive you to the Dochula Pass at 3140m for a photo stop and to enjoy the most spectacular view of the Himalayan snowcapped mountains and a great view of Gasa Dzong at a distance if the weather is clear. (with a coffee or tea at the pass).Visit the National Memorial Chorten built in honor of Bhutan’s late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, followed by a visit to the Giant Buddha Shakyamuni statue at Kuenselphodrang and a visit Trashichoe Dzong, seat of the national government and the Central Monastic Body which includes the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan). With remaining day a last minute souvenir shopping in the shops of Thimphu. (Overnight hotel in Thimphu)
Day 13 : Depart Bhutan
Drive to Paro International Airport where our team will bid you farewell as you embark on your onward journey.
