Jaisalmer Overview

Jiasalmer is a town in the north-western region of Rajasthan. The city has been nick-named "The Golden city" because of the extensive use of yellow sandstones in most of the structures. It makes them appear golden. This city was founded in 1156 AD by Rajput King, Maharawal Jaisal Singh, after whom it has been named. The word Jaisalmer refers to "Hill Fort of Jaisal". The predominant culture in Jaisalmer is that of Bhati Rajputs. This region has been under the princely rule of Rajputs since its establishment.

This city is in proximity with Pakistan and located amidst the Thar Desert. The fort and ancient havelis are reminders of the eminent past. The architecture of houses and other structures is typical to the Rajput clan. Today, it is a very popular destination for travellers who want to have unique experiences. The nigh safari in the desert is the most sought after activities.

Climate and Geography

Jaisalmer is small town in West Rajasthan which lies very close to the border area between India and Pakistan. It is a desert town, situated in the middle of Thar Desert. The ground elevation is approximately 229m. The summers are dry and very hot. Winter temperatures are moderate during the night but the nights are chilly. This region gets scanty rainfall. One small river named Kakni flows 48 km away.

Transportation

Travelling to Jaisalmer is more convenient by road and rail.

Rail: The railway station here has daily connectivity with major towns in the north. The luxury train, Palace on Wheels, makes a stop here.

Roadways: The National Highways 15 connects this town with Delhi, Ahmedabad and major cities of Rajasthan. Luxury and deluxe buses are available for direct traveling.

Local Transport: The town is small enough to be covered on foot. Bikes and cars are available on rent. A camel trip can also be undertaken for short distances.

Shopping & Entertainment

Besides enjoying the magnificence of the fort and havelis and the camping in deserts, the tourists can spend some money on shopping. The shops are mainly located inside the fort. They offer hand-made products made by artisans of widows in the village. The products up for sale are embroidery-silk and cotton clothes, items made with camel leather, silver jewellery and bronze statues.
