    Idukki District has a mixed culture because of the migration of a large population from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu and some parts of Kerala. This district has 245 tribal settlements out of which 11 arw in Peermedu, 74 in Thodupuzha, 34 in Udumbanchola and 126 in Devikulam Taluks. There is a large population of scheduled tribes which is living in either the deep interiors of thickly grown forests or in the extreme remote hilly banks. About 11516 scheduled tribal families according to the latest census are living in Idukki District. The chief inhabitants of Idukki District are scheduled tribes which comprise of Mannan, Malayarayan, Oorali, Muthuvan, Paliyan, Malapandaram, Hilpulayan, Ulladan and Malayan. Adimali Fest is one of the highly celebrated festivals of Idukki. It is also the most prominent agricultural festival of high ranges since the year of 1991.

Idukki Overview

Idukki is the second largest districts in the state of Kerala formed on 26th January 1972. It has a total of 22 cities. Some of them are Adimali, Idukki, Cheruthony, Painavu, Munnar, Marayur, Kattappana, Thodupuzha and Vazhathope. Its name was derived from the Malayalam word Idukku, meaning ‘narrow gorge’. The largest arch dam of Asia is Idukki Dam where Periyar flows through a gorge between two giant rocks. This dam is the main source of hydroelectricity of the state, accounting for 66% of the total power generation.

This district has unparalleled natural beauty and is one of the growing tourist destinations in India. It offers some exotic views to the onlookers with its wildlife, forests, hills, dams and plantations. For tourists interested in adventure sports, Idukki has some trekking facilities to offer as well. Munnar city in of this district is gaining popularity as a honeymoon destination. Peermede is a plantation town in Idukki which is also worth a visit.


Climate & Geography

Idukki is a high altitude district at an elevation of 1,200m. 97% of the area is occupied by rugged mountains and forest. Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar Rivers flow through here.



The climate of the western part shows great variation from the eastern side of the district. The western part is a midland having moderate temperature throughout and eastern part is highland area and has a cold climate. Rains from both south-west and north-eat monsoon wet the place heavily.



Transportation

Idukki is accessible only by roads. NH39 and State Highways 13 and 33 pass through the district. The nearest airport is in Kochi, 110km away and the nearest railway stations are Kottayam and Ernakulam, approximately 115km away.
