Shivalik Fossil Park, Sirmaur Overview

Shivalik Fossil Park, Nahan, also known as Suketi Fossil Park, is one of the most significant fossil parks, which is situated on the land of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district. One of the most interesting facts about Shivalik Fossil Park is that it is Asia’s forst park to be established at the same area where the actual fossils were unearthed. The Shivalik Fossil Park, Nahan has a wide gathering of vertebrate fossils s well as skeletons which are dated long long back to the prehistoric times.


Located at a distance of 21 kilometres from Nahan, it is worth mentioning that Suketi Fossil Park is the largest fossil park of the entire Asia section. It is also to be noted here that Shivalik Fossil Park, Nahan, is located on the banks of the Markanda River and in the upper and middle Shivaliks. The fossil park is bestowed with soft sandstone and clay rocks, and is widely known for its open-air demonstration of six life-sized models of extinct mammals in fibreglass.

Suketi Fossil Park or Shivalika Fossil Park is a park where the fossils that were found were looked out as fossils those were there for about 2.5 million years ago. In addition to this, the mammalian fossils that were found at this region are counted amongst the richest antiquities of the entire world. In fact, even before entering the museum, you will get to see the six extinct animals in a fiberglass that are inclusive of four-horned giraffe, gharial, huge land tortoise, sabre-toothed cat, hippopotamus and large tusked elephant. That’s not all, the other fossils that were unearthed right here in this fossil park are inclusive of a hippopotamus with six incisors (Hexaprotodon Sivalensis), a saber-toothed tiger (Paramachaerdus) and a grand elephant (Stegodonganesa Sivatherium).

The best time to visit Shivalik Fossil Park, Nahan is anytime during the year, but don’t travel herein the month of January for the weather during this month is really very chilly and when we say so, we really mean it.

Suketi Fossil Park or Shivalik Fossil Park is situated for over 21 kilometres away from Himachal Pradesh’s Nahan and can easily be reached by any public or private transport.

One of the foremost things to keep in mind is to take up two-wheeler to reach the place as the lane that directs one to the destination is very narrow.
