Dar-es-Salaam City Tour Half Day Excursion explores Dar-es-Salaam – located on the Indian Ocean coast, Tanzania's largest city and logistics hub. It is affectionately known as 'Dar' but it is not the capital of the country - that title belongs to Dodoma. Dar-es-Salaam is primarily a port city in southern Tanzania, located on a huge natural harbor. "Dar-es-Salaam" means "haven of peace", but you'll find with almost 3 million people calling the city home, it's not exactly tranquil. Visitors to Dar-es-Salaam are usually en route to Tanzania's fantastic southern national parks including the Selous and Ruaha, or catching a ferry to the exotic Zanzibar archipelago.

In the morning after breakfast we’ll pick you up from your hotel and take you straight to visit Kivukoni Fish Market. This is the busiest fish market in Dar-es-Salaam where most fishermen come after their fishing expedition to sell their catch in wholesale. You will see red snapper, lobster, prawns, squid, barracuda and shellfish fresh from the Indian Ocean. You can buy corrie shells that are found along the Tanzania Indian ocean coastline.
After leaving Kivukoni Fish Market you’ll see the Ocean Road Hospital and the State House. You will have a chance to visit the nearby Botanical Garden which were established a hundred years ago by Germans. Opposite the garden is Karimjee Hall and you’ll be able to see the fantastic architecture while your guide explains the history behind the building. Today the Botanical Gardens feature a wonderful selection of indigenous plants, including purple bougainvillea, blue jacaranda, scarlet flame trees and red hibiscus as well as the coco-de-mer palm tree, native to Seychelles.
Next you’ll visit the National Museum, close to the State house. In the museum you will find Dr. Leakey's findings from Olduvai Gorge including the skull of Nutcracker man (Zinjanthropus bosei) and other human fossils are displayed. The Museum have many items that were used in the olden days by various tribes in Tanzania including collection of tribal ornaments, head – dresses, witch-craft paraphernalia and traditional musical instruments collected from various regions in Tanzania.
The Mwenge Carvers Market is made up of small shops with stands displaying carvings of different kinds, traditional dresses, the Tinga Tinga paints and more. You’ll be able to browse the stalls, chat with the carvers and buy souvenirs if you wish. After that you’ll visit the Makumbusho Village museum which is more interactive than the National Museum, allowing you to get a feel for the whole of Tanzania in a very short time.
Drive to the very colorful Kariakoo Market with exotic fresh produce and local textiles in the center via University of DarEs-Salaam. The University of Dar es Salaam is well-known as Mlimani short visit to the market before driving to Mnazi Mmoja Park Beautiful park near the city centre with a symbolic Uhuru Torch Monument, built to celebrate the country's Independence in 1961. Lunch will be at the Peacock Hotel where you can experience authentic Tanzanian hospitality and food. After lunch you’ll visit the Clock Tower and see St. Joseph’s Cathedral which was build hundreds years ago in the Gothic style.
You’ll visit Samora Avenue to see and learn about the historical Askari Monument. Then you’ll visit the beautiful old Azania Front Lutheran Church and take in the views of Dar Es Salaam harbor view from the roof. In the late afternoon when the tour is over we’ll drive you back to your hotel. It’s been a busy day and you’ll have seen and learnt a lot about Dar Es Salaam.
