Also known as Lion Rock, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most visited attractions. Rising 200 meters above the jungle, the ancient rock fortress was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa as a royal palace and stronghold. The remnants at the summit offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into advanced ancient urban planning.
Halfway up the rock, visitors can see the famous Sigiriya frescoes, believed to depict celestial maidens. These paintings, sheltered in a small rock alcove, are admired for their vibrant colors and graceful lines, and they remain among the best-preserved examples of ancient Sri Lankan art.
Originally polished to such a shine that the king could see his reflection, the Mirror Wall now holds ancient graffiti and poetry from visitors dating back over 1,000 years. These inscriptions give rare insight into the thoughts and expressions of early travelers and scholars.
At the base of the final ascent is the Lion’s Paw Terrace, where two massive stone lion paws flank the stairway that once led through the lion’s mouth to the top of the fortress. The paws are all that remain of the grand lion structure, which gave Sigiriya its name.
The base of Sigiriya features one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world, including symmetrical water gardens, boulder gardens, and terraced gardens. The site’s sophisticated hydraulic engineering, with fountains still working during the rainy season, showcases the ingenuity of ancient Sri Lankan architects.
