6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb-Marangu Route Tour

After departing from Moshi, we drive to Marangu Gate for the necessary registration and formalities. Once the paperwork is complete, the trek begins. We will ascend through a beautiful tropical rain forest, climbing from an elevation of 1,890 m (6,046 ft) to 2,720 m (8,858 ft) over a distance of 8 km (5 miles). The hike will take approximately 4-5 hours. As we climb to the upper edge of the forest line, we may encounter blue monkeys. The trail then widens, offering stunning views of the surrounding hillsides, before reaching Mandara Hut, where we will rest for the night.

After departing from Mandara Hut, we continue our trek through the forest before the trail opens up into the high moorland. Along the way, we may get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, two of the three volcanic peaks that make up the summit of Kilimanjaro. The hike covers a distance of 12 km (7 miles), taking approximately 6-8 hours, as we ascend from 2,720m to 3,720m. We will reach Horombo Hut, where we will rest for the night

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, we begin our acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Ridge. The trail ascends for 5 km (3 miles), taking 2-3 hours, and we gain an elevation from 3,720m to 4,390m. From Mawenzi Ridge, we will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After spending some time exploring and taking in the scenery, we descend back to Horombo Hut, covering the same 5 km (3 miles) in 1-2 hours, dropping back to 3,720m. This extra day helps our bodies adjust to the higher altitude and prepares us for the days ahead.

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, we begin our ascent towards Kibo Hut. The trail gradually climbs as we cross the lunar desert known as the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After covering a distance of 10 km (6 miles) in 6-8 hours, we reach Kibo Hut, located at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall at an elevation of 4,720m. Once at the camp, we take time to rest and prepare for the upcoming summit day, enjoying an early dinner to fuel our bodies for the challenge ahead.

We begin the day at 11:00 PM with tea, snacks, and getting dressed warmly for the challenging summit push. At midnight, we start the ascent under the dark sky, with frequent short breaks as we climb through the night. The conditions at this elevation are harsh, with cold winds and low temperatures. After several hours of climbing, we reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m/18,600ft), where we are greeted by an unforgettable sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. From there, we continue for another hour to Stella Point (5,756m/18,880ft), and finally, we reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After celebrating the accomplishment and enjoying the expansive views, we begin our descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and brunch. Later, we continue our descent to Horombo Hut, where we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and prepare for a well-earned rest.

On the final day, we embark on a long descent through the tropical rainforest. As we make our way downhill, the lush surroundings provide a beautiful end to our journey. Once we reach Marangu Gate, the park headquarters, we will sign out and receive our summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to take us back to our hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
