There’s no better way to take in iSimangaliso Wetland Park than on horseback. The “Beach and Bush” horse ride (about 2.5 hours) suits both beginners and seasoned riders, offering both the reserve and the ocean from a fresh perspective. Departing from IPhiva Camp stables, you can choose a full beach ride or a combo with the savanna – just decide on the day. Trot down to the shoreline and head north to First Rocks or south to Lake St Lucia; in whale season (from June to November) humpbacks may even breach offshore. The inland stretch takes you through open savanna, where zebra, wildebeest and warthogs cross your path. Bookings are required at least a week in advance.
