Package Overview

If you come to Mumbai as a tourist for a few days and you spend your time in the posh southern tip of the city, around the Gateway of India and Marine Drive, it is easy to forget that a big part of the urban population in India lives in slums and has to fight for a livelihood every day. Around 60% of the citizens of Mumbai live in slums and Dharavi, with a population of at least half a million, probably has become the most famous one of them, especially after the success of the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.

The tour is separated into two parts. In the first part the guide takes you through the commercial area of the slum. Especially waste recycling is a big business in Dharavi and the residents and workers who scavenge materials from all over the city bring them to the little workshops in order to clean, process and recycle them, from old aluminium cans to plastic chairs. But also foodstuffs like biscuits or pottery items are produced in Dharavi. The visit of a roof right in the center of the settlement allows you to get an impression of the vast dimensions of the place and the number of people who must be working and living there

On the tour you will be guided by the local Guide who will be fluent in English. With his extraordinary knowledge that you experience the sights and sounds of Dharavi as only a local would. The Dharavi tour leaves from a central location in Mumbai and takes you through the heart of the slums, teaching you its history, bringing you in contact with its people and introducing you to its way of life & their standard of living.

Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Mumbai

It is said for the Mumbai Markets; that even a week’s stay in Mumbai is less to cover all its Markets. The tour covers different Markets in Mumbai or Bazaars as we say in Hindi.
Highlights : Mumbai's wide streets and narrow lanes are alive with activity. In front of colonial buildings, alongside temples, and everywhere in between, vendors shout from carts selling everything from colourful birds and flowers to traditional Indian clothes and food. We'll guide you through the chaos and introduce you to Mumbai's must-see markets such as Crawford Market and Mangaldas Market as well as some lesser known ones such as Flower Alley. Alongthe way we’ll also visit some of the oldest lanes in Mumbai and their most famous temples.
Linking Road : Linking Road was one of the first arterial roads "linking" the far-flung suburbs of Bandra and Juhu during the 1940s. The oldest name of the road was Dadabhai Navroji Road. Linking Road and Hill Road were two of the main shopping hubs in the suburbs of Mumbai. Over the years this shopping hub has stretched beyond its original length.
Colaba Causeway : Shopping at Colaba Causeway is like visiting a carnival. There is not one thing that a person will not find here. Handicrafts, books, clothes, shoes, jewellery; you name it and Colaba Causeway has it.

Chor Bazaar : Chor Bazaar, located near Bhendi Bazaar in South Mumbai, is one of the largest flea markets in India. Chor Bazaar is said to sell mostly second-hand goods rather than stolen goods. The market is now famous for antique and vintage items.A store called Mini Market offers old Bollywood posters for sale. Others offer authentic Victorian furniture, replacement parts for automobiles, etc. Although bargains are sometimes staggering, haggling is considered mandatory. This is basically an "organized" flea market, where one has to rummage through junk to find what one wants.
Mangaldas Cloth Market : Mangaldas Market, traditionally home to traders from Gujarat, is a mini-town, complete with lanes of fabrics. Even if you’re not the type to have your clothes tailored, drop by DD Dupattawala for pretty scarves and dupattas at fixed prices. Zaveri Bazaar for jewellery and Bhuleshwar Market for fruit and veg are just north of here. Just a few metres further along Sheikh Menon Rd from Bhuleshwar is a Jain pigeon feeding station, flower market and a religious market.

Zaveri Bazaar : The market houses the headquarters of many jewelry institutions of India including Jagawat Sons(of Mankhush Jagawat) and Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri, one of the biggest jewelry retailers of India, established in 1864. All kinds of gems and precious stones are available in the market as well as ornaments of traditional Indian designs to modern designs made of every possible gem and precious metal. Zaveri bazaar is regarded as being secured because it has CCTVs installed in order to avoid almost any crime, private protection involved for every shop, industry is under 24 hr vigilance because it does a huge trade in diamond and also other mettle jewelry. Zaveri Bazaar is also famous for photo frames, clips, tea-sets, dinnerware, toys and other luxury lifestyle articles crafted out of expensive metals. Zaveri Bazaar gets the maximum credit of jewelry and gems export from the country.
As we complete the market visits with buying enough stuff the tour ends with our memorable shopping spree at 18:00 hrs and then we proceed back to hotel.
