Imbros Gorge – Frangokastello

Discover the second most popular gorge of Crete and the mysterious beach of Frangokastello.

We start our trip driving to the west of Crete and have our first stop in the village of Skaleta, where you can relax and enjoy your breakfast before we continue our journey to our main destination – Imbros Gorge.

The length of the Gorge is 8 km and you need about 2-3 hours to finish it. The route is mostly descending but never steep, which makes it ideal for families with children. Although the Gorge is much shorter and easier to walk than the renowned Samaria Gorge, it is equally captivating with its several narrow stony passages, the steep slopes and cliffs around, wild vegetation and the shady trees that protect you from the scorching sun.

After finishing the gorge we head to one of the most interesting and impressive places in Crete – Fragokastello. Here you can visit the Venetian castle of Fragokastello (Castle of the Franks) which is closely associated with the legend of Drosoulites, shadows of men in black wearing helmets and carrying swords who appear at dawn every spring, allegedly Cretan fighters that died during the Battle of Fragokastello.

The view is breathtaking: high mountains, great plains and the deep blue sea form a unique landscape. The beach of Fragokastello is truly magnificent: sandy with pebbles in parts and shallow turquoise crystal-clear waters its an idyllic place for relaxing after the walk.Entrance to Imbros gorge – €2
