The Lower Dolpa Trek is a true adventure for those desiring to get off the beaten path. The Dolpo region is an area of difficult-to-access Himalayan valleys in the northern part of Nepal. This area was also portrayed in the Oscar-nominated movie Caravan. This trek gives one the opportunity to see and experience Himalayan Mountains and gorgeous lakes including the Phoksundo with its stunning turquoise blue water. Also one will see traditional yak caravans’ carryjng on trade with nearby Tibet, and spectacular high-mountain Buddhist monasteries.
The Dolpo region is located in the northern region of Dhaulagiri range in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The dramatic slopes of the mountains create ever-changing compositions of light and shadow. Trekking in the Dolpo region was only opened to foreigners in 1990. The caravans of yak and sheep that travel through the Dolpo valleys have not only provided trade with Tibet but also an interchange of culture. The Dolpo people of Nepal share many cultural aspects with Tibetan people. In the Dolpo region, both Tibetan Buddhism and the Bon form of religion are evident. Legend says that the hidden valleys of the Dolpo region were formed by Guru Rinpoche as a haven for those with pure mind. Spirituality is evident throughout the Dolpo region.The trek itself is challenging. The route goes through famous high passes like Bagala and Numala where one is rewarded by with excellent views of mountains.
