The 6 days Machame route is designed to give climbers enough time to acclimatise and summit safely. Commonly nicknamed the Whiskey route, Machame is one of the most popular routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and is prized for its unparalleled natural beauty along the trail. The route is more challenging, steep and difficult compared to other routes on Kilimanjaro and is recommended for climbers with previous high altitude trekking experience. Because it is a relatively shorter route it suits climbers who have limited time, although longer routes generally offer higher summit success rates.
Day 1 begins at Machame Gate at 1790m and involves trekking up to Machame Camp at 3010m. This first day starts the ascent on the Machame route, passing through montane forest and offering early opportunities to enjoy the natural scenery while beginning the acclimatisation process for the climb.
Day 2 departs Machame Camp at 3010m and ascends to Shira Camp at 3845m. The day continues the climb along the Machame route, gaining altitude and allowing climbers to acclimatise further while experiencing the changing mountain environment.
Day 3 moves from Shira Cave at 3845m to Barranco Camp at 3960m. The trek covers the terrain between the Shira plateau region and the Barranco area, continuing altitude gain and acclimatisation as part of the Machame route experience.
Day 4 ascends from Barranco Camp at 3960m to Barafu Camp at 4640m. This day involves steeper and more challenging terrain as climbers make significant altitude gain en route to the high camp in preparation for the summit push.
Day 5 is the summit day. Climbers depart Barafu Camp at 4640m for a pre dawn ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5895m. After reaching Uhuru Peak, climbers descend to Millennium Camp at 3790m for rest and recovery. This is the most strenuous and pivotal day of the Machame route.
Day 6 involves trekking down from Millennium Camp at 3790m to Mweka Gate at 1630m. The route exits the mountain via the Mweka route and gate, and climbers are transferred back to Moshi as part of the completion of the climb.
