Experience the adventure of a lifetime on the legendary Machame Route. The route takes you through remarkable changes in landscape from lush rainforest and dramatic moorland to alpine desert and the glaciers surrounding the summit. This carefully planned climbing experience combines professional mountain support, safety, comfort, good food, and the goal of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Start and end in Moshi, Tanzania with mountain camping throughout the climb.
After breakfast and a detailed briefing in Moshi, you will drive to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations. Begin the trek through lush rainforest surrounded by towering trees and tropical vegetation, progressing along established trails to Machame Camp. At camp your mountain crew will prepare the evening meal and set up your mountain accommodation, providing a first night of mountain camping as you settle into the expedition.
Leave the rainforest and climb into the heath and moorland zone as the landscape opens dramatically. Enjoy expansive views of the mountain and surrounding valleys while ascending through changing ecological zones. Arrive at Shira Camp where you will rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude, enjoying mountain camping and provided meals.
This is an important acclimatization day. Trek across the high altitude landscape toward Lava Tower, gaining elevation before descending to Barranco Camp. The climb high and sleep low principle is used to help your body adapt to increasing altitude, aiding acclimatization and preparing you for later stages of the climb.
Begin the day with the famous Barranco Wall followed by a trek across the mountain's dramatic alpine landscape. Continue toward the Karanga area and then ascend to Barafu Camp, which serves as your base before the summit attempt. Use this time to rest, eat, and prepare carefully for the upcoming summit night.
Your summit attempt begins around midnight with a slow and steady ascent from Barafu Camp toward Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the Roof of Africa. Celebrate reaching the summit and then descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp where you will recover from the summit effort and camp overnight.
After breakfast start the final descent through beautiful rainforest down to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate at the gate and say goodbye to your mountain crew. You will then be transferred back to Moshi where the Kilimanjaro climb concludes.
