This 6 day Marangu Route trek on Mount Kilimanjaro progresses from the rainforest through moorland and alpine desert to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. The itinerary includes registration at Marangu Gate, trekking through lush rainforest with wildlife sightings, acclimatization at Zebra Rocks, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a midnight summit push via Gilmans Point and Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, and descent back to Marangu Gate where you receive your summit certificate. Daily hiking times, distances and habitats are provided for planning and acclimatization purposes.
After registration at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) begin the trek through lush rainforest habitat for approximately 4 to 5 hours covering about 8 km. The rainforest is rich with wildlife including blue monkeys and colorful birds. The day finishes with arrival at Mandara Hut (2,720 m) for dinner and an overnight stay.
Leave the rainforest behind and trek into moorland with spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo. The hike takes around 6 to 7 hours covering about 12 km through moorland habitat. The day ends with an overnight stay at Horombo Hut.
Acclimatization day with a hike to Zebra Rocks at 4,020 m before returning to Horombo Hut. This extra acclimatization hike is intended to greatly improve success on the summit attempt and helps participants adjust to higher altitude.
Trek from Horombo Hut across the alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo toward Kibo Hut. The hike covers approximately 10 km and takes around 5 to 6 hours in alpine desert habitat. Arrive at Kibo Hut and rest early to prepare for the summit climb.
Begin the summit climb around midnight from Kibo Hut, ascending via Gilmans Point and Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa. After reaching Uhuru Peak descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, hiking approximately 20 km over 5 to 6 hours. At Marangu Gate receive your summit certificate marking completion of the Marangu Route trek.
