Samaria Gorge

Early in the morning our bus will pick you up from your hotel and we will head to the west of the island. In the middle of the way we will make a short stop in the village of Skaleta, where you will have the opportunity to relax and have a breakfast, then we will continue our way to the plateau of Omalos.

The descent into the gorge begins from Xiloskalo where we get into the 18-kilometer-long canyon, which is considered to be the longest in Europe. Normally we need 5-6 hours to cross the rocky gorge and reach the southern coast of the island.

Our route will follow the bed of a mountain river Taras. During the walk we will see the caves, which served as a refuge for the inhabitants of Crete during the war, and now they are a natural habitat for the famous Cretan mountain goats – Kri-Kri. In the middle of the way we will meet the abandoned village of Samaria and closer to the end – the famous Iron Gates (Sideroportes), the narrowest spot of the route, just a few meters wide and 300 meters high.

At the end of our walk we will reach the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli, where we will have time for a lunch and a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea. After that we will get on a ship that will bring us to the village of Chora Sfakion, where our bus will be waiting for us.

If you decided to visit the Samaria Gorge, please bring with you hiking boots or other sports shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a second pair of socks, swimsuit and a light jacket. It is also necessary to take a small bottle of water that you can refill in one of the purest natural springs, which we will meet on our way.Entrance to Samaria gorge – €5
