In Quechua language Apu Pachatusan means “he who holds the world”. Bordering 16000 ft, it is the highest mountain in Cusco Valley. It is located 15 miles South-East of Cusco, the Inca capital. From the top you can see the Inca sacred valley, carved by the Vilcanota River, and the magnificent Apus Salkantay and Ausangate, among others.
Since ancient times, this mountain keeps an endless number of mysteries and legends still alive nowadays in the local tradition. In addition, it has high Andean lakes, endemic flora and fauna, the presence of Andean camelids such as the alpaca, customs and usage of local people, the archaeological complex of Tipón, and so on. TREK TO APU PACHATUSAN
In the morning, hotel pick-up in Cusco on private transportation to the rural community of Huaccoto, located at 13300 ft, place where we started the route. After one hour hiking on a flat terrain with grasslands, we will reach an area of small high-Andean glacial lakes. From there we will ascend following the mountain crest until reaching the secondary summit, where we can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is planned to arrive at the main summit after 4 hours of hike, there we will have the deserved lunch and plenty time to take pictures.
After a good rest, we will descend on steep terrain to a flat area where there are some crop fields and sources of water. We continue descending to the village of Patabamba until we reach the archaeological site of Tipón, where the Incas built a set of impressive platforms and canals to transport the mountain water, an impressive work of hydraulic engineering and agronomics. We will finish the tour at this point where a private transport will take us back to Cusco.
