The Cederberg is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and sculpted sandstone rock formations. One of its hidden gems is the Stadsaal heritage site, located in the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve, part of the greater Cederberg Wilderness Area. These ancient caves, shaped by millennia of wind and weather, house remarkable San rock art – including a striking elephant mural estimated to be over 1,000 years old. It’s easy to find by driving 8 kilometres east of Dwarsrivier on the Ceres Road and looking out for the Stadsaal sign. Permits and a key to access the gate can be obtained at Mount Ceder Lodge, Dwarsrivier Farm, or any local tourist office. It’s an unforgettable stop where nature and history meet in the most dramatic setting.
