Gatura Greens' story began in 1959 when our grandfather became one of the first black Kenyans allowed to plant tea commercially on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. He passed on his passion to our father, who later pioneered Kenya’s cultivation of Purple Tea, establishing the country’s first Purple Tea farm and building a specialty tea factory that processes over 10 tea variants for export, including Purple Tea, Green Tea, Black Tea, and hibiscus tea. Today, more than six decades later, we have expanded into tea tourism, offering immersive farm tours led by my brother, a walking tea encyclopedia, and launched our luxury specialty tea line, BREW IT, to share our family’s love for premium orthodox teas with the world.
Purple Tea Farm
9:30 – Arrive in Gatura Greens, Gatanga.
The experience begins with tea and fresh scones for guests while the host gives an informal history about the farm, followed by an introductory tea tasting of the most popular teas from our very own speciality cottage tea Factory.
10:00 – Purple Tea Farm Tour
After learning about the farm and tasting the popular tea selection made at the Factory, guests head out to the purple tea farm. While at the farm, guests are taught how to pick tea and get to pick some of their very own. This tea will then be taken back to the farm where guests will be taught how to make their very own speciality orthodox tea (this includes learning to roast it, roll it by hand, dry it then pack it for themselves to take home).
11:00 – Waterfall Trek and Swimming
After guests make their very own hand-picked and rolled purple tea, they head off to the waterfall trek, through a beautiful bamboo forest, finishing off with a refreshing dip at the waterfall by the farm.
12.30 – Lunch and Relaxation
Guests then return back to the farmhouse in time for a farm-fresh 3-course meal, crowning the day with a bonfire in the gardens as guests leave at their pleasure with a packet of their very own home-made speciality orthodox purple tea, picked and processed by them.
14.00 – Tea tasting
