1 Nights / 2 Days
A tour from Kolkata to Gangasagar is a spiritual and scenic journey that allows you to explore both urban and rural landscapes, alongside the holy significance of the Gangasagar pilgrimage. Below is a suggested itinerary for a 2-day trip:
Morning:
Start Early (6:00 AM):
Begin your journey from Kolkata early in the morning to make the most of the day.
You can either take a private car (around 3-4 hours drive) or travel by train to reach the Namkhana station, which is the nearest railhead to Gangasagar.
Mid-Morning (9:30 AM - 10:00 AM):
Arrival at Namkhana:
Upon arrival at Namkhana, take a shared auto-rickshaw or private cab to Kakdwip (about 20-30 minutes drive).
Reach Kakdwip and board the Ferry:
From Kakdwip, you need to take a ferry to Gangasagar (this can take about 1 hour). The boat ride is scenic, with beautiful views of the river and delta, so make sure to carry a camera.
Early Afternoon (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM):
Arrival at Gangasagar:
Once you reach Gangasagar, you can head straight to Kapil Muni Ashram, the site of the famous Kapil Muni Temple. This is the main pilgrimage destination for those visiting Gangasagar.
Darshan at Kapil Muni Temple:
The temple is dedicated to Sage Kapil, where it is believed that he meditated and imparted spiritual teachings. The Ganges here meets the Bay of Bengal, creating a spiritually significant spot. You can offer prayers and take a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal.
Lunch (1:30 PM - 2:30 PM):
Local Bengali Cuisine:
You can enjoy some authentic local Bengali food at one of the nearby eateries. Try Hilsa fish, Prawn Curry, or Bengali sweets like Rosogolla or Sandesh.
Afternoon (2:30 PM - 4:00 PM):
Explore the Area:
After lunch, take some time to explore the surroundings of Gangasagar. You can walk along the beach, visit nearby temples, or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this rural location.
Evening (4:30 PM - 6:00 PM):
Sunset at the Beach:
Head to the Gangasagar Beach in the evening for a serene view of the sunset. It’s a quiet and beautiful spot to relax before heading back.
Night (6:30 PM - 7:00 PM):
Return to Kolkata:
Head back to Kakdwip by ferry and then take a car or auto-rickshaw to Namkhana station. From there, you can take a train back to Kolkata, or if you prefer, you can hire a private vehicle for the return journey.
The drive back should take around 3-4 hours, so you will reach Kolkata by late night.
If you have additional time and are returning to Kolkata the next day, you can visit the following attractions:
Howrah Bridge: The iconic bridge over the Hooghly River.
Victoria Memorial: A beautiful colonial-era monument and museum.
Kalighat Temple: A famous temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali.
Dakshineswar Kali Temple: A spiritual retreat by the Hooghly River.
