4 Days Trip to the Danakil Depressions

Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Mekelle, driving northeast through stunning desert landscapes toward the Afar region. As you leave the highlands behind, the scenery changes dramatically into dry, rocky plains and vast salt flats. Along the way, you’ll pass through small Afar villages where nomadic people live in traditional huts. After several hours of driving, you’ll arrive at Dodom, the base of the famous Erta Ale volcano. In the late afternoon, you begin the hike to the summit, which takes about 3 hours. As night falls, you’ll witness the breathtaking sight of the glowing lava lake, one of the few active ones on Earth. Dinner and overnight camping are near the crater under the stars.

Wake up early to admire the sunrise over the volcano before descending back to Dodom. After breakfast, the journey continues across the desert toward Hamed Ela, a small Afar village that serves as the gateway to the salt flats. The drive is long but fascinating, with views of the barren desert, camel caravans, and the colorful landscapes of the Afar Depression. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax and experience the simplicity of desert life. Enjoy dinner and overnight camping under a spectacular night sky filled with stars.

After an early breakfast, set out to explore the remarkable Dallol area, one of the hottest and most otherworldly places on Earth. Here you’ll discover colorful hydrothermal fields with bright yellow, green, and orange mineral formations created by sulfur, salt, and iron. Continue to the nearby salt flats of Lake Assale, where you can watch Afar workers and camel caravans extracting and transporting salt blocks using centuries-old methods. In the afternoon, return to Hamed Ela for dinner and overnight, reflecting on the day’s surreal and unforgettable landscapes.

After breakfast, begin your drive back to Mekelle. The journey retraces the route through the dramatic desert terrain, offering one last chance to enjoy the views of the Afar region’s volcanic formations and salt plains. You’ll stop for lunch in route before gradually ascending back into the cooler highlands. Arrive in Mekelle by late afternoon, marking the end of your extraordinary Danakil Depression adventure filled with volcanic wonders, salt fields, and unique Afar culture.
