Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by a representative from Way 2 Africa Expeditions and transferred to your hotel in Arusha, a drive of approximately 50 kilometers taking about 1 hour. Arusha is a vibrant town nestled beneath Mount Meru and serves as the gateway to northern Tanzania’s mountain and safari adventures.
This day is dedicated to rest and preparation after your international journey. In the evening, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive trek briefing, equipment check, and an overview of the days ahead. Any missing or unsuitable gear can be arranged locally. You may spend the remainder of the day relaxing at the lodge, enjoying the garden atmosphere, or simply adjusting to the local climate and altitude.

Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, you depart Arusha for a scenic drive to Momella Gate, located inside Arusha National Park, covering approximately 40 kilometers in about 1 hour. Upon arrival, registration formalities are completed and you are assigned an armed ranger who accompanies the group throughout the trek due to the presence of wildlife.
The trek begins through lush montane forest, a rich ecosystem filled with towering fig trees, moss covered trunks, and diverse birdlife. The trail ascends gently, allowing a comfortable pace while offering frequent wildlife sightings such as giraffes, buffaloes, bushbucks, and black and white colobus monkeys.
You trek approximately 10 kilometers in 4 to 5 hours, steadily gaining altitude until reaching Miriakamba Hut at 2514 meters. The hut is beautifully located in a forest clearing with scenic views and cool mountain air. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

The distance covered today is approximately 5 kilometers with a trekking time of 3 to 4 hours. As you gain elevation, the air becomes cooler and the landscape more rugged. You arrive at Saddle Hut at 3570 meters, strategically positioned between Little Meru and the main summit ridge. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization. Those feeling strong may take a short optional hike toward Little Meru to further aid altitude adaptation.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly unforgettable moment. From the top, you enjoy sweeping panoramic views across Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ash Cone, the Great Rift Valley, and the surrounding plains of northern Tanzania. After time for photos and celebration, you begin the descent back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and brunch.
You then continue descending through heathland and forest back to Miriakamba Hut, allowing your body to recover at lower altitude.
