Location and Description of Aberdares National Park
Aberdares National Park lies in the central highlands, west of Mount Kenya. Offering spectacular scenery, an excellent range of wildlife, and superb bird life, the Aberdare National Park is a popular park and is probably most known for The Ark and Treetops lodges. All of the Big Five can be seen in Aberdares National Prak - lion, leopard, good population of Black rhino, buffalo and elephant.
The Park covers an area of 766Km2 and occupy the volcanic range that form the eastern wall of the rift valley. The Aberdares range is dominated by two peaks separated by a saddle of moorlands. The Northern Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999m) and the southern peak Kinangop (3,906m). Other significant elevations in the park are Chebuswa( 3364m), Table Mountain(3791), Maratini Hill (3698m) and the Elephant (3590m).
Aberdares National Park Topography and Vegetation
Aberdares National Park topography is diverse, mountain ranges and peaks soar to around 14,000ft., giving way to canyon-like V-shaped valleys that give way to gentler valleys separated by steep hills and rocky outcrops. Streams and rivers cascade down through spectacular waterfalls. Aberdares National Park is an important water catchment providing water to the Tana and Athi rivers and part of central rift and northern drainage basins. Above the forest is a belt of bamboo, a favorite haunt of the Bongo, a rare and elusive forest antelope. At 10,000ft. The bamboo gives way to moorland, home to eland, spotted and melanistic Serval cats. Other features are the giant alpine varieties of lobelia, groundsel and heather
Wildlife viewing in Aberdares National Park
Animal life is most abundant in the forest zone of the Aberdares National Park. All of the Big Five can be seen in Aberdares National Park - lion, leopard, good population of Black rhino, buffalo and elephant. Other species found here include: baboon, Black and White Colobus monkey, Black-Faced Vervet monkey, bongo, bushpig, dik dik, duiker, eland, gazelle, genet, Giant Forest hog, reedbuck, suni, Sykes' monkey, warthog, waterbuck.
