We’ll pick you up in style – your own private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep
Want to visit an incredibly popular park? Popular for its amount of wildlife, that is. But for tourists, it’s not as well known… yet. Discover the incredible animal populations of Tarangire National Park, known for Tanzania’s second-highest density of wildlife.
How do over 3,000 elephants sound? Or over 700 lions? Did you know that Tarangire has its own migration of over 250,000 animals? Or, that it is considered a bird watcher’s paradise?
Even the flora in this special park is striking to the eye – witness the startling and bizarre baobab tree, with its enormous trunk and crown of heavenly-reaching branches.
You’ll find everything in this off-the-beaten-path reserve… except other safari-goers. Not as popular as the big-name parks, you’ll enjoy this exceptional ecosystem pretty much to yourself. Sound like a fun day? Read on.
The Other Great Migration
The park is named for the source of its vital life-giving waters, the Tarangire River which runs through the reserve. During the dry season from June to October, vast herds of wildebeests, hartebeests, gazelles, zebras, giraffes, plus lions, leopards, and African wild dogs are drawn to the nourishing waters, guaranteeing excellent animal viewing.
Herds of as many as 300 elephants gather at the river for sustenance and seek further water sources in underground streams.
Birding in Tarangire
But all is not dry in Tarangire, the park is blessed with wetlands and verdant marshes which attract over 550 species of avian life. You’ll spot hornbills, guinea fowl, steppe eagles, brown parrots, crested francolins, vultures, Kori bustards, love birds, bee-eaters, and the white-bellied go-away bird.
Tarangire’s hills and woodlands also provide fertile arbors for its plovers, eagles, ostriches, and ashy starlings. The birds are busy and plentiful year-round but the migratory season from November to April offers exceptional viewing.
The Unique and Unusual
We’ve already mentioned the huge and arresting baobab tree found in the park, also known as “The Tree of Life” as its immense trunk can hold hundreds of gallons of water and because these signature trees can live up to 600 years. Its seeds are edible and the park’s elephants depend on them to sharpen their tusks on the rough edges of its tough bark.
The strange quirks of Tarangire have also birthed the great humps arising from the park’s plains. As you might suspect, these are immense termite mounds. Constructed by some of the smallest creatures in the reserve, they fit neatly into the natural order here. When the termites abandon the mounds, they are taken over by the dwarf mongoose, who refurbishes the space to their liking, in one of nature’s more symbiotic displays.
