The 6 days Machame route is specially designed to give you enough time to acclimatise and summit safely, giving you an edge over the 6 days Machame Route variant. The Machame route, popularly nicknamed the Whiskey route, is one of the most popular routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail offers unparalleled natural beauty and is more challenging, steep and difficult compared to other routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is recommended that climbers attempting this route have previous trekking experience at high altitudes. The route is suitable for climbers who need a few days of climbing and do not have time for longer routes, though longer routes generally have higher summit success rates. The trek begins at Machame Gate and finishes by descending via the Mweka Route, exiting at Mweka Gate.
Begin the trek at Machame Gate (1790m) and ascend through the montane forest to Machame Camp (3010m). This day establishes the start of the Machame route and begins the acclimatization process as you move from lower elevation forest into higher terrain. Expect varied trail conditions and scenic forest landscapes en route to camp.
Depart Machame Camp (3010m) and trek towards Shira Camp (3845m). The terrain changes from forest to moorland and open vistas as altitude increases, providing increasingly expansive views and further acclimatization opportunities as you gain elevation to Shira.
Leave Shira Cave area (3845m) and continue across high moorland and ridge sections towards Barranco Camp (3960m). This stage continues acclimatization and involves traversing varied high altitude terrain, with camp established at Barranco near rugged cliffs and scenic surroundings.
From Barranco Camp (3960m) trek onward, traversing through alpine desert and steep sections to reach Barafu Camp (4640m). This day includes challenging terrain as you move higher in preparation for the summit push, with important acclimatization and rest at Barafu Camp before summit attempt.
Depart Barafu Camp (4640m) on the summit bid to UHURU PEAK (5895m) then descend to Millennium Camp (3790m). This is the key summit day: a night or pre-dawn ascent to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point at 5895m, followed by a descent back down to Millennium Camp to recover and acclimatize after the summit.
Trek from Millennium Camp (3790m) down through forested slopes to Mweka Gate (1630m) where you exit the park. This final day is a long descent, moving from high altitude back to lower elevations and completing the Machame route trek before transfer back to Moshi.
