Mabul is surrounded by sandy beaches, which is perched on the northwest corner of a 2 square kilometer reef! Since 1970s, the island housed 2 fishing villages of Kampung Mabul (Mabul Village) and Kampung Musu (Musu Village). There are about 2000 villagers living in Mabul that are mainly Bajau Laut and Suluk Muslims who live a nomadic lifestyle.
