The 7 days Machame route is designed to give climbers enough time to acclimatise and summit safely, providing an advantage over the 6 day Machame variant. Known as the Whiskey route, Machame is one of the most popular routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and offers unparalleled natural beauty. This route is more challenging, steep and difficult compared to many other routes so climbers should ideally have previous high altitude trekking experience. The Machame route is suitable for climbers who need a relatively shorter climbing schedule while maintaining a reasonable summit success rate due to the 7 day acclimatisation profile.
Trek begins at Machame Gate at 1790m with ascent to Machame Camp at 3010m. This first day involves entering Kilimanjaro National Park and trekking through rainforest zones with rich flora and potential wildlife sightings en route. The day ends with setting up at Machame Camp allowing initial acclimatisation before further ascent.
Ascend from Machame Camp at 3010m to Shira Camp at 3845m. The day transitions from rainforest to heath and moorland landscapes offering expansive views and varied vegetation. Climbers continue to acclimatise as altitude increases.
Trek from Shira Cave area at 3845m towards Barranco Camp at 3960m. The route includes traversing high moorland and scenic plateaus. This stage continues gradual acclimatisation and exposes climbers to alpine conditions and unique Kilimanjaro landscapes.
Continue from Barranco Camp at 3960m to Karanga Camp at 3963m. This day includes challenging trail sections and spectacular views of the southern glacial valleys and rugged terrain. Continued acclimatisation prepares climbers for higher camps ahead.
Ascend from Karanga Camp at 3963m to Barafu Camp at 4640m. The terrain becomes more alpine and exposed as climbers make final preparations for the summit push. This day focuses on rest, hydration and final acclimatisation at high altitude prior to summit attempt.
Early morning summit attempt from Barafu Camp at 4640m to Uhuru Peak at 5895m, the highest point on Kilimanjaro. After reaching Uhuru Peak climbers descend to Millennium Camp at 3790m. This day includes the strenuous nighttime ascent for summit and a long descent to lower elevation for recovery.
Trek from Millennium Camp at 3790m down through the Mweka Route to Mweka Gate at 1630m. This final day is a descent through alpine and then rainforest zones, culminating in exit from Kilimanjaro National Park and transfer back to Moshi. The descent allows recovery and celebration of summit success.
