Rongai route begins on the northern side of Kilimanjaro Mountain approximately 45 km from Moshi town or 69 km from Arusha. It is considered one of the most beautiful and relatively easier routes on Kilimanjaro with increasing popularity. The route offers a variety of spectacular landscapes, diverse plant and animal species, and typically takes 6 days though many hikers prefer 7 days to increase summit success rates. Unlike Marangu which uses huts, Rongai uses tents pitched by porters at the end of each day. The route approaches the summit from the northeastern side near the Kenya Tanzania border, covers approximately 72 kilometers, and reaches Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters. The northeastern side receives less precipitation making Rongai suitable for climbing at any time of year.
Begin in Moshi and transfer to Nalemoru Gate at 1990 m where the trek commences. From Nalemoru Gate you trek to Simba Camp at 2625 m where tents will be pitched by porters for the overnight stay. This first day establishes acclimatization and introduces the northern Kilimanjaro landscape and flora.
Trek from Simba Camp at 2625 m ascending through changing vegetation zones toward Kikelewa Camp at 3630 m. The day focuses on steady gain in altitude with scenic views and opportunities to observe mountain flora as you move higher.
Continue the ascent from Kikelewa Camp at 3630 m to Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4310 m. The trail climbs into higher alpine terrain and offers closer views of Mawenzi massif. Overnight is at Mawenzi Tarn Hut where tents are used.
Ascend from Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4310 m to School Hut at 4715 m. This day involves continued high altitude trekking to establish acclimatization at the higher hut and prepare for the summit push. Overnight at School Hut in tents.
Summit day begins from School Hut at 4715 m with the ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5895 m, Mount Kilimanjaro summit. After reaching the summit you descend to Horombo Hut at 3700 m for overnight. This is the most demanding day with significant altitude change and rewarding summit views.
Final day involves descent from Horombo Hut at 3700 m down to Marangu Gate at 1860 m where you exit the national park. From Marangu Gate you transfer back to Moshi concluding the trek. This day completes the Rongai 6 day route with return to Moshi.
