Journey to the Serengeti Plains

Rise early, fuel up with breakfast, and hit the road. We cut through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, taking in jaw-dropping views on the way. Then, it’s down into the Serengeti, and before you even reach your lodge in Seronera, you’re already spotting wildlife. Full Day Exploring the Great Migration

Today is all about the Great Migration. With a packed lunch ready, you’ll head out early and spend the day tracking the herds. Ngorongoro Crater Descent

After one last game drive in the Serengeti, we head back toward Ngorongoro. Get ready—the descent into the crater is something else. 1. What does the all-inclusive package actually cover?
Good question. Usually, you get all your accommodation for the safari, every meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and sometimes bottled water. You’re also covered for all game drives, park entry fees, and a professional driver or guide. Ground transportation comes in the form of a 4x4 safari vehicle, and airport transfers are included if mentioned in your itinerary. But always double-check what’s not included. Things like international flights, visas, tips, alcoholic drinks, travel insurance, and your personal expenses almost never make the cut.
2. When’s the best time to see the Great Migration?
The Great Migration never really stops, but certain months stand out. December through April, the herds gather in the Southern Serengeti, and it’s calving season—plenty of action. From May to July, the herds make their dramatic river crossings in the Western Corridor as they head north. August to October, they’re up in the Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara, which means more river crossings and tons of wildlife. If you have fixed dates, your safari operator can help you pick the sweet spot.
3. What kind of accommodation will we stay in?
The brochure talks about “cozy, tucked-away lodges,” but that could mean a lot of things. Ask for the exact names of the lodges or camps you’ll be staying at. There’s a big difference between standard lodges and luxury tented camps, so it’s worth checking them out online to make sure they fit your style and comfort level.
4. How big are the safari groups? Will it be just us, or a shared vehicle?
Make sure you know if you’re joining a group of other travelers or getting a private vehicle and guide. Group sizes vary a lot, and this can really change both the price and the whole experience.
5. How fit do I need to be for this trip?
You don’t have to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable climbing in and out of a 4x4 several times a day and handling long, sometimes bumpy rides on rough roads. The Ngorongoro Crater descent is a drive, not a hike, but the altitude at the rim can bother some people.
6. Is the Maasai village visit authentic, and do we pay extra?
Most village visits are real, but they’re set up for tourists. Ask if the visit is optional and whether there’s an extra fee—it’s pretty common to pay a per-person community fee directly to the village.
7. What should we pack?
You’ll get a full packing list from the operator, but here are the essentials: neutral-colored clothes (think khaki, green, beige), a warm jacket for chilly mornings and evenings—especially up at the crater rim—binoculars, a good camera, extra memory cards or batteries, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sturdy closed-toe shoes.
