In 1931, the city of Napier was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that lasted 2.5 minutes, leveling most of the city. A reconstruction quickly started and the art deco style emerged as the main theme, making Napier one of the most architecturally unique spots in New Zealand. To this day, thousands of people flock to the city every February for an art deco weekend unlike any other.
