Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival

You will be met at Santiago Airport and transferred into the capital of Santiago de Chile.

Check into your hotel in this sophisticated and cosmopolitan city, situated in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes Mountains and the beautiful Chilean Coastal Range.

  • Day 2 : Santiago

Today is free to explore the modern city of Santiago independently.

We suggest you take the Hop Off Bus which stops at all the key attractions, including the cable car up to the enormous Metropolitan Park. At over 750 hectares, this beautiful urban park is the largest in South America - covering San Cristóbal Hill as well as the Chacarillas and Los Gemelos hills. Afterwards take the funicular back down to the city.

You can visit the Pre-Colombian Museum and it is also fun to watch the changing of the guards in front of the La Moneda Presidential Palace, which takes place at 10 am every second day.

This evening you will join your group tour.

Note: On group tours, for operational reasons it is sometimes necessary to substitute one hotel for another of a similar standard.

  • Day 3 : Santiago

This morning enjoy a half day tour of Santiago, a relatively compact city where modern buildings have transformed the landscape.

We visit the Plaza de Armas in the heart of the old colonial town and bustling Ahumada Boulevard with its many shops, street performers and vendors. Here you will be able to see two beautiful neo-classical buildings - the 18th century Metropolitan Cathedral and the early 19th century Royal Court Palace, which now houses the National History Museum. You will also see the Cathedral, Post Office and current Presidential Palace, La Moneda.

Afterwards we travel eastwards along the main avenues of old Santiago and across the bohemian neighborhood of Bellavista to Santa Lucia Hill, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Andes Mountains. Drive through the chic neighborhoods, shopping and financial centers of modern Santiago, before returning to your hotel.

The afternoon is free to explore more of Santiago independently. Alternatively there is the option of a visit to the famous Concha Y Toro Winery in the Pirque Valley.

  • Day 4 : Santiago

Alternatively enjoy an optional full day excursion to the historic seaport of Valparaíso and the neighbouring 'Garden City' of Viña del Mar. We depart from Santiago and travel 2-hours across the Coastal Mountain Range and through the Curacavi and Casablanca Valleys, to Viña del Mar, with its many parks and floral clock. Although a popular seaside resort, the Humboldt current from Antarctica means the sea is cold here, with heavy morning fog that usually burns off by midday. View the Qunita Vergara Park and Carrasco Palace, and outside the Fonck Museum you can see an original giant Moai statue from Easter Island. Valparaiso is the second largest city in the country and home to the Chilean Parliament (the Congress of Chile). Prior to the opening of the Panama Canal, this cosmopolitan city was the most important Pacific seaport on the crucial trade route that linked the American west coast with Europe, via the Strait of Magellan. The homes around this natural harbour were built over 44 steep hills, two of which are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Their many stairways, colourful houses and old funicular elevators are a real feature, as is the amazing graffiti you will find everywhere. The quirky and eclectic architecture, parks and historic monuments make this a lively and chaotic city, with many bars and restaurants. Soak up the atmosphere on the Plaza Sotomayor, the most important square situated on the sea shore, before returning to Santiago (lunch is for your own account).

  • Day 5 : Torres Del Paine National Park

Transfer to Santiago Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Punta Arenas Airport and walked to the bus station for your 3-hour public bus ride to Puerto Natales - the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park.

You will be met at the bus station and transferred to your hotel in this former fishing town situated on the Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope) Sound.

  • Day 6 : Torres Del Paine National Park

Today enjoy a full day excursion driving 2-hours across the dry scrubland of the Magellanic Steppe to Torres del Paine National Park - a 242,000 hectare UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its soaring mountains, electric-blue lakes and many glaciers.

We drive past Figueroa Lake and several large cattle estancias, which are home to the Chilean 'baqueanos' (also called 'huasos' or cowboys), who drink a distinctive caffeine-rich herbal tea known as 'mate', served in a round cup, and love to compete in local rodeos. Along the way we stop at the village of Cerro Castillo where you can see the Monument of the Horse sculpture, enjoy a coffee and buy typical handcrafts from the region. A variety of rare wildlife can be seen in these pampas (lowlands) including the elegant guanaco, a type of humpless camel related to the llama, and the lesser rhea which is related to the ostrich and emu. You may see giant condors soaring in the thermals, as well as eagles. Grey and red fox also live here, but are rarely seen.

After seeing our first postcard views of the Paine Massif across the waters of Lake Sarmiento, we enter Torres del Paine National Park. Here the landscape changes dramatically to spectacular glacier lakes frequented by marine birds, lofty waterfalls and magnificent granite mountain peaks covered by ice. The enormous Campo de Hielo Sur icecap gives the park four main glaciers - Grey, Dickson, Zapata and Tyndall. Two other glaciers descend from the west side of the central massif.

Weather permitting, from the viewpoint at Lake Amarga ('Bitter Lake') you will have one of the best views of the three granite Torres Del Paine ('Towers of Blue') from which the park takes its name. Guanaco are plentiful on the open plains of the eastern sector of the park, as are their main predator - the puma (also called mountain lion, or cougar), but as they are nocturnal and have excellent camouflage they are rarely seen. Our next stop is at the Lake Nordenskjold lookout, with its view over the different peaks of the Paine Massif, including the famous 'horns' (Cuernos del Paine) and Paine Grande, the highest mountain in the park at over 10,000 ft (3,050 m). We then take a 15-minute walk to the powder blue Salto Grande Waterfall that flows into Lake Pehoé, after which we stop for an included lunch.

In the afternoon we continue driving along this beautiful chain of glacial lakes to Grey Lake, where you can walk across a hanging bridge over the Pingo River to the shores of the lake. From here walk 30-minutes each way to get up close to spectacular blue icebergs that have fallen from the Grey Glacier, which can be seen in the distance.

We then leave Torres del Paine, stopping on our return journey at the Milodón Cave on Benitez Hill. The remains of several extinct animals have been found here - including the sabre toothed tiger, the American horse and a gigantic herbiverous mammal known as the Milodon. The main cave is 200 meters deep, 80 meters wide and 30 meters high and has a life-size replica of the Milodon. We return to Puerto Natales in the late afternoon.

  • Day 7 : Bulnes Fort

Transfer to the bus station for the 3-hour public bus ride to Punta Arenas Airport for your onward flight.

Here there is the option of travelling 1-hour to visit the historic restored Bulnes Fort on the Strait of Magellan, where you can also see a variety of marine life including gulls, carrancho, caiquenes, bandurrias and cormorants.

You will be met at Santiago Airport and transferred to your accomodation.

Check into your hotel in this capital city in the shadow of the Andes.

  • Day 8 : Santiago

Another day free to explore Santiago.

Today there is the option of a full day excursion to the famous Maipo Valley Winelands outside Santiago. Our first stop is the Perez Cruz Winery, including a cellar tour & two wine tastings. After an included lunch, we continue to the Haras de Pirque Winery for another wine tasting. This wine estate also breeds horses.

  • Day 9 : Departure

Transfer to Santiago Airport for your flight home.
