Why The Railway Museum is Famous

The Railway Museum in Livingstone is famous for being a significant repository of Zambia’s railway history. The museum’s collection highlights the crucial role rail transport played in connecting Zambia with neighboring countries, such as Zimbabwe, and facilitating trade in the region. Zambia’s railway system was pivotal in transporting goods, especially copper, from Zambia’s copper belt to the ports in neighboring countries like Tanzania and South Africa.

One of the museum's key attractions is its collection of vintage locomotives, many of which date back to the colonial period. These locomotives and carriages offer visitors a rare opportunity to see the evolution of rail transport in Southern Africa. The Railway Museum also showcases the early technology used in rail construction and the history of railway lines that were built under the British colonial administration.

Additionally, the museum is famous for being located in the same building as the original Livingstone railway station, which was built in 1905. This adds an authentic historical touch to the museum’s experience, as visitors can explore the station building itself and learn about its role in the development of the area.

Had a great overnight safari with some rafting friends. Philemon was suggested by some local rafter and very glad we went with him. He showed us lots of cool stuff, but also filled us in on history and ecology of Botswana, Namibia, and the Zambezi basin. His camp staff were awesome. Sitting by the camp fire while someone else cooks isn’t typically our style, but the conversations with him and his helpers as they prepared the meals was super enlightening and really enjoyed learning about local dishes and spices. This was a trip I’d absolutely go on again, and would fully suggest to others! ...more

Unforgettable Camping Safari with Phillimon 🇧🇼 We had an amazing time on our camping trip, and our guide Phillimon made it truly special. He was incredibly knowledgeable, took time to explain everything, and kept us entertained with his great sense of humor. One of the highlights was spotting lions just as our game drive ended. Later, as we sat around the campfire, we could still hear their roars in the distance—and even throughout the night. A truly magical experience! The simple but comfortable tents, the delicious meals prepared by Phillimon’s team, and the incredible wilderness atmosphere made it a trip to remember. If you’re looking for an authentic safari adventure, I highly recommend Phillimon and his team. We were a group of seven, camping for one unforgettable night in January 2025—an experience we’ll never forget! 🦁🔥✨ ...more

My husband, my mom and I we have done a trip with Pillimon as our tour guide. The trip was fantastic as we have seen many many wild animals very close to us. Such as elephants, lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, impalas, crocodiles, buffalos, etc also many different types of birds. We have been in end of January, beginning of February and the weather was fantastic, everything is green, happy animals around. I have stayed overnight in camping side, which was great! In the wild but protected but our tour guides. I highly recommend visiting Chobe National park in Botswana for as many days as your can. ...more
