In the local language, Patuxai means Victory Gate or the Gate Of Triumph. It is a war monument dedicated to the memory of those who fought against French invasion. The Patuxai Victory Monument is embellished with a crenellated upper level which holds five towers, one in each of the four corners & a fifth one in centre. The five towers stand for the five principles of Buddhism which include amiability, flexibility, honesty, honor and prosperity. The inside of the temple is decorated with lotus leaves, stupa shaped towers, as well as mythological figures such as the kinnari & serpent. There are four gateways to the monument – one in each of the four directions. There is a pond in the front of each of the gateways, which together symbolize the open petals of a lotus flower. The naga symbols on the four corners of the gateways stand for fertility, welfare and happiness. Tourists can also climb to the top of the monument and enjoy a majestic view of surroundings, right upto the Mekong river. Opening Hours: From 08:00 to 16:30 on Mondays to Fridays, and 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
