Bhutan has more than 200 species of mammals ranging from species such as tigers, elephants, and rhinoceros to snow leopards, blue sheep, and takin. Of this, one is critically endangered, 10 are endangered, 14 are vulnerable, and three are near-threatened. This diversity is due to Bhutan’s location at the juncture of the Indo-Malayan and Paleartic realms. Also, the incredible range in altitude from almost sea level to over 23,000 feet creates a diversity of niches to which mammals can adapt in unique ways.
