1 Nights / 2 Days
This itinerary prioritizes key highlights of both parks in a more fast-paced trip.
Morning (6:30 AM - 7:30 AM): Pick up from your hotel in Nairobi or Mombasa.
Drive to Tsavo East National Park: Embark on a scenic drive to Tsavo East. From Nairobi, you'll pass through semi-arid landscapes; from Mombasa, you'll head inland.
Arrival & Lunch (Around 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM): Arrive at Tsavo East National Park (e.g., Voi Gate or Mtito Andei Gate). Complete park entry formalities and proceed to your chosen lodge/camp for check-in and lunch.
Afternoon Game Drive (3:00 PM - 6:30 PM): Head out for your first game drive in Tsavo East. Focus on:
"Red Elephants": Look for the iconic elephants covered in the park's reddish dust.
Aruba Dam: A man-made dam that attracts a variety of wildlife, including large herds of buffalo and various bird species.
Mudanda Rock: A massive rock outcrop that acts as a water catchment, attracting numerous animals, especially elephants, during the dry season.
Predators: Keep an eye out for lions (Tsavo is famous for its "man-eaters" history), cheetahs, and leopards (though more elusive).
Evening: Return to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Early Morning Game Drive (6:30 AM - 8:30 AM): Enjoy a final early morning game drive in Tsavo East, catching wildlife at their most active.
Breakfast (8:30 AM - 9:30 AM): Return to the lodge for breakfast.
Drive to Tsavo West National Park: After breakfast, check out and drive to Tsavo West National Park (crossing the Nairobi-Mombasa highway).
Tsavo West Highlights & Lunch:
Mzima Springs: Visit this unique geological feature where millions of gallons of crystal-clear water gush from underground lava rocks. Use the underwater viewing chamber to see hippos, crocodiles, and fish in their natural habitat.
Shetani Lava Flow & Caves: Explore this eerie landscape formed by recent volcanic activity (Shetani means "devil" in Swahili, referring to local folklore). You might be able to explore some of the lava caves (with a guide).
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: Drive through this fenced sanctuary dedicated to protecting the highly endangered black rhino. Your chances of spotting a rhino here are higher.
Lunch: Have lunch at a lodge within Tsavo West (e.g., Kilaguni Serena) or a packed picnic.
Afternoon Game Drive (Optional, time permitting): A shorter game drive in Tsavo West to explore more of its diverse landscapes and search for wildlife.
Departure to Nairobi/Mombasa: Begin your drive back to Nairobi or Mombasa.
Arrival (Around 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM): Arrive back at your hotel or the airport.
