6-Days Kilimanjaro - Rongai Route Tour

Package Overview

The term "Rongai Route" is perhaps a bit misleading. It is the name that everyone uses, although technically it is not the right one. The authorities closed the actual, original Rongai Route several years ago after determining that two paths on a mountainside that few hikers use were superfluous. The route used to begin at the border settlement of the same name. Many maps still show this path, but today, it is the only one used by trekkers who want to ascend Kili from the north.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : ARRIVAL

  Our representative will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and escort you to your accommodation in Moshi. The hotel offers a range of amenities to make your stay enjoyable, including a swimming pool, hot water, friendly staff, Internet access, and comfortable rooms. To ensure you are fully prepared for the climb, our managers or guides will provide a briefing in the evening.
  
  Nale Moru-Simba Camp

  Hiking Time: 4 hour
  Habitat: Montane Forest
  
  Your head guide will pick you up from your hotel after breakfast and transport you to Kilimanjaro National Park so you can register and start the climb. From here, you drive up to the village of Nale Moru, which is around 1,950 meters above sea level. The three to four hour walk today starts on a short route that meanders past potato and maize fields before entering a pine forest. You will progressively climb through picturesque forest to the moorland zone's edge. Today's high point will be expansive views of the Kenyan lowlands. them is advised to have waterproof clothing in case you need them because the rainforest can get rather damp. Overnight and dinner at the 2,650-meter Simba campground.

• Day 2 : Simba Camp - Kikelewa Cave

  Elevation: 2,750 m to 3,600 m
  Distance: 17 km
  Hiking Time: 7 hours
  Habitat: Moorland
  
  You leave for the Kikelewa Caves after breakfast at camp. It will take you approximately five to six hours to trek from the campsite to Second Cave, which is 3,450 meters above sea level. If the weather permits, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim and Kibo, the summit. We eat dinner tonight and set up tent at 3,800 meters close to Kikelewa Caves.

• Day 3 : Kikulelwa-Mawenzi Tarn Hut

  Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
  Distance: 7km
  Hiking Time: 4 hours
  Habitat: Semi-Desert
  
  The hike today is shorter—about three to four hours—but it has some tougher parts. A true sense of nature and breathtaking vistas in all directions await you after leaving camp after a quick but hard hike over grassy slopes. It leaves behind the vegetative zone. At Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330m), have dinner and spend the night.

• Day 4 : Mawenzi Tarn Hut - Kibo Hut

  Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,695 m
  Distance: 8km
  Hiking Time: 5 hours
  Habitat: Alpine Desert
  
  On this day you will walk for 4 to 5 hours as we cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo (Kilimanjaro’s two highest peaks). Early dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut

• Day 5 : Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

  Elevation: 4,695 m to 5,895 m to 3,690 m
  Distance: 4 km up, 14 km down
  Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
  Habitat: Alpine Desert.
  
  Before starting the summit attempt, you will be awakened up early (about 1am) for a hot beverage and a snack. To get to the crater rim at Gilman's Point, which is 5,685 meters above sea level, we will go very slowly by torchlight. We will take a quick nap there to take in the breathtaking sunrise above Mawenzi Peak. Next, we proceed to the roof of Africa, Uhuru (Freedom) Peak, which stands at 5,895 meters. Before moving on to camp at Horombo hut we descend to Kibo hut for a rest and brunch.

• Day 6 : Horombo -Marangu Gate

  Elevation: 3,690 m to 1,830 m to 1,387 m
  Distance: 18 km
  Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  
  On the last day, you will descend for around five to seven hours to the 1,700-meter Marangu Park entrance, where you will sign off from the mountain. The stroll follows nice roads through a verdant woodland. A driver will meet you and take you to your Moshi hotel.
