5 Nights / 6 Days
Similar to the Lemosho route, the Shira route is another way to reach Kilimanjaro from the west. In fact, Lemosho is an upgraded version of the original Shira route. Unlike Lemosho, which begins at Londorossi Gate and travels through the rainforest to Shira 1 Camp, the Shira route skips this walk by transporting climbers via vehicle to Shira Gate, which is close to the Shira Ridge. The 6-day itinerary is ultimately faster, with a more direct summit push, while the 7-day version provides an extra day for acclimatization. This flexibility is ideal for those on a tighter schedule or those who need additional time to acclimate for a safer summit attempt."

SHIRA GATE TO SHIRA CAMP 2
Elevation: 11,800 ft to 12,500 ft
Hiking Time: 2 hours
Distance: 6 km | 4 miles
Habitat: Heath
Meals: Full Board
Following breakfast and your guide's briefing, depart Moshi and travel for a few hours to the Shira Gate on Kilimanjaro western flank. Once there, register with the national park. Start hiking and head straight into the rain forest. You are walking up a ridge on a meandering, muddy track through the rainforest. Trekking poles and gaiters will be helpful because it can get muddy and wet at these lower heights. Make a lunch break halfway and arrive at the Shira Camp in the afternoon. Take a nap, unpack, and have some coffee or tea. Dinner is provided at 7:00 p.m. in the early evening.
Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 7 km | 4 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Full Board
We proceed eastward up a hill before turning southeast toward the 300-foot-tall volcanic rock structure known as the Lava Tower. We travel 13,000 feet through the peculiar yet stunning Senecio Forest to reach Barranco Camp. The time spent at a higher altitude is quite helpful for acclimatization, even when you start and finish the day at the same elevation.
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 5 km | 3 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Full Board
We start the day by going down into a gully to the Great Barranco Wall's base. Next, we ascend the almost 900-foot cliff, which is steep but not technically challenging. We traverse a sequence of hills and valleys from the summit of the Barranco Wall before descending precipitously into Karanga Valley. We reach Karanga Camp after a very strenuous ascent. Today is shorter and intended for acclimatization.
Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 4 km | 2 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Full Board
As we exit Karanga, we come to the intersection with the Mweka Trail. We keep going until we reach the rocky part of Barafu Hut. The Southern Circuit, which provides views of the summit from a variety of perspectives, is now complete. Here, we set up camp, relax, and eat dinner early in order to get ready for the summit day. You can see the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi from here.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Distance: 5 km | 3 miles

Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Distance: 12 km | 7 miles
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Full Board
We start our ascent quite early in the morning (about midnight). This part of the journey is the most physically and mentally taxing. At this altitude and time of day, the wind and cold can be severe. We take regular but brief stops as we climb for several hours in the dark. You will be rewarded with the most spectacular sunrise you will ever see approaching Mawenzi Peak, which is located close to Stella Point (18,900 feet). We return to Mweka camp after reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Full Board
Our final day is spent descending to Mweka Gate and picking up our summit credentials. At lower altitudes, it may be muddy and damp. We go an additional hour from the gate to Mweka Village. A car will pick us up in Mweka Village and take us back to the Moshi or Arusha Accommodation.
