Aberdares-Kenya Day Trekking - Satima Summit Via Shamata And Rhino Gates Tour

Leave Nairobi at 6.30am and drive for 3 hours to Nyeri. Here link up with the guide and porters and then drive to the KWS Park headquarters where you will be assigned a ranger to escort you to the mountain. Drive towards Nyahururu then turn off to the Rhino gate. Register and keep driving for 12km to Chebuswa or the Twin Peaks (3,365m). Park the vehicle at some point and start walking. From this point, animal trails ascend up the lower moorlands normally covered with alpine giant heather, which sadly gets ravaged by forest fires from time to time, leaving behind charred sticks. As you work your way further southwards, this vegetation gradually gives way to tussock grass in marshes. Breathtaking landscapes soon unfold ahead as interesting rock formations including the Dragon’s Teeth come into view, standing tall on the plateau. Depending on your level of fitness, it takes about 2 hours to trek from the Twin Peaks to the Dragon’s Teeth. As you climb higher past these rocks on marshes, the trail contours along ridges until Satima comes into view. A short steep climb gets you to the summit at 4,000m taking about 3 to 4 hours and 8km from the Twin Peaks.
Walk back to the Shamata gate for the vehicle pick up and drive back to Nairobi to reach late in the evening.
