Mt. Kailash (6700m) lay in the far west corner of Tibet which is observed by the locals as the appearance of Mt. Meru. It is believed that the founder of the Bon religion, Tonpa Shenrab has moved down from the Heaven in this Mountain Meru. Tantric Buddhists also believe that Mount Kailash is the home of the Buddha Demchok who represents the supreme bliss. In Jainism, Kailash is also known as Meru Parvat or Sumeru. Ashtapada, the mountain next to Mt. Kailash is the site where the first Jain, Rishabhadev) attained spiritual liberation.

Moving around Mount Kailash over a Drolma La Pass is believed to wipe away the sins of a lifetime. Manasarovar Lake is also considered as equally Sanctified and bathing in this lake is said as essential part of the whole pilgrimage. So the tour is collectively called Kailash Manasarovar tour or Yatra.
