The 6 days Machame route is specially designed to give you enough time to acclimatise and summit safely, giving you an edge over the 6 days Machame Route variant. The Machame route, popularly nicknamed the Whiskey route, is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and offers unparalleled natural beauty. It is more challenging, steep and difficult compared to other routes and is recommended for climbers with previous high altitude trekking experience. This route is shorter than some alternatives and suits climbers who need fewer days of climbing. The trail begins at Machame Gate and finishes by descending via the Mweka Route before exiting using the Mweka Gate.
Day 1 begins at Machame Gate (1790m) and proceeds to Machame Camp (3010m) via the Machame route. This initial ascent starts the acclimatization process and introduces trekkers to the scenic environments and natural beauty characteristic of the Whiskey route.
Day 2 moves from Machame Camp (3010m) to Shira Camp (3845m). The trek continues to higher altitude to aid acclimatization while traversing the diverse landscapes of the Machame route.
Day 3 progresses from Shira Cave (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m). Trekkers continue to gain altitude and experience the varied terrain and natural features along the Machame route.
Day 4 goes from Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m). This day involves continued ascent and preparation for the summit push, with important acclimatization benefits as elevation increases.
Day 5 is the summit day. Trekkers depart Barafu Camp (4640m) for the ascent to UHURU PEAK (5895m) and then descend to Millennium Camp (3790m). This day includes a pre-dawn summit push to reach Uhuru Peak and a descent afterward to a lower elevation for recovery.
Day 6 is the final descent from Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m). The trek concludes with a descent out of the mountain, followed by exit procedures at the Mweka Gate and return transfers to Moshi.
