Rongai route begins on the northern side of Kilimanjaro Mountain, approximately 45km from Moshi town or 69km from Arusha. Rongai is one of the most scenic approaches from the northern side and is regarded as one of the easier routes, with growing popularity. The route features a variety of spectacular landscapes and diverse plant and animal species. The typical duration for this trip is 6 days, though many hikers opt for 7 days to increase success rates. Unlike Marangu which offers hut accommodation, Rongai uses tents for overnight stays and at the end of each day porters will have tents pitched for campers.
Start from Moshi and proceed to Nalemoru Gate at 1990m, then trek up to Simba Camp at 2625m. The day involves approach to the mountain and the initial climb into the Rongai route landscape. Tents will be provided and pitched by porters at the end of the day.
Trek from Simba Camp at 2625m ascending through changing landscapes toward Kikelewa Camp at 3630m. The day covers higher alpine terrain and scenic views characteristic of the Rongai route. Tents will be provided and pitched by porters at the end of the day.
Continue the ascent from Kikelewa Camp at 3630m to Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4310m, moving into higher alpine zones and closer to summit approaches. The terrain becomes more rugged and scenic. Tents will be provided and pitched by porters at the end of the day.
Ascend from Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4310m to School Hut at 4715m. This day involves further acclimatization and gaining altitude in preparation for the summit push. Tents will be provided and pitched by porters at the end of the day.
Early summit day from School Hut at 4715m to Uhuru Peak at 5895m, Mount Kilimanjaro summit, followed by descent to Horombo Hut at 3700m. This is the longest and most demanding day of the itinerary with summit exposure and descent to lower elevation for recovery. Tents will be provided and pitched by porters where applicable.
Descend from Horombo Hut at 3700m down to Marangu Gate at 1860m and then transfer back to Moshi. The final day includes descent to park exit and return transfers to town, concluding the Rongai route trek.
