Day 1 : Arrive

Check in, settle in and relax in your lush sub-tropical surroundings.
Day 2 : Durban
This morning join your small group tour, departing from Durban and travelling inland for 3-hours to the mighty Drakensberg Mountains.
We stop for a city tour in Pietermaritzburg, a beautifully preserved Victorian town. Here we visit St Peter's Cathedral and walk along charming streets, allowing you to savour the character of this city and its captivating past.
At Howick we visit the site where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962, marking the start of 27 years of imprisonment. We continue through the rolling hills and farmlands of the beautiful Natal Midlands, following the 'Midlands Meander' - an arts and crafts route through picturesque scenery.
Check into your hotel in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains, recognised as a World Heritage site for its vast collection of San Bushmen rock art paintings. Known locally as the 'Barrier of Spears', the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains form the backbone of Southern Africa, running all the way down from the Great Rift Valley.
On escorted group tours please note that for operational reasons it is sometimes necessary to substitute one hotel with another of similar quality. Porterage of one suitcase is included.
Day 3 : Giants Castle
This morning enjoy more of the magnificant scenery of the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains, as we visit Giants Castle where we walk 45-minutes to one of the main Bushman caves.
These mountains once offered shelter to the Bushmen, before their clashes with the Zulus and the white settlers. Painted on the rocks, they left behind their stories of sacred animals and journeys to the spirit world. The small museum offers an interpretation of the paintings and artefacts on display.
In the afternoon we return to our hotel, with balance of day at leisure.
Day 4 : Zululand
Today we travel 3-hours through rural Zululand to the remote Zulu Battlefields.
But first we make our way to the Spion Kop Battlefield, where one of the bloodiest battles of the South African War (Anglo Boer War) of 1900 took place in efforts to relieve Ladysmith, which was besieged for 118 days. Visit the mass graves atop Spion Kop hill and see for yourself how poor military decisions affected the outcome of this battle.
Incredibly three future world leaders were in the area at the time this battle took place - Winston Churchill as a young newspaper correspondent, the future Mahatma Gandhi as a stretcher bearer, and Louis Botha as the Boer general who would go on to become the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.
Continue to Ladysmith, where we visit the Siege Museum where a diorama depicts the town and its surrounding hills at the time of these battles. We travel via Dundee to your accommodation in the heart of the Zulu battlefields and enjoy dinner at our hotel.
Day 5 : Zulu Battlefields
This morning enjoy a full day tour to the poignant Zulu Battlefields.
Your guide will recount the events leading up to the fateful battle of Isandlwana, where in 1879 the mighty British army suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in its history following the controversial invasion of Zululand. See for yourself the events portrayed so passionately in the film Zulu Dawn, as the regiment was wiped out almost to a man by 20,000 Zulu warriors. Time permitting, we also visit Fugitives Drift, where two young officers attempted to carry the Queen's colour to safety.
After lunch we continue to the famous mission station at Rorkes Drift, where later that day a handful of British soldiers (outnumbered 30-to-1) fought off over 4,000 Zulu warriors for almost 12 hours. This battle - unforgettably brought to life by Michael Caine in the film Zulu - saw 11 Victoria Crosses awarded, which is more than in any other engagement in the history of the British Empire.
