Nagaland - The Land of Folklore Tour

Dibrugarh is the gateway to the "Hidden Land" of Eastern Arunachal Pradesh. The Ahoms from Thailand came through Northern Myanmar through this area in the 13th century to establish their Empire which thrived in the ancient land of Assam. It is the "Camellia" town of Upper Assam, an undisturbed haven, with its rich tea gardens resembling a lush green carpet.

Excursion to Digboi (90kms/one way). Enroute visit Nam Phake village and Bells Temple. Overnight at Nam Phake village eco resort/home stay.

Excursion to Dibru - Saikhowa National Park (70kms/one way). Overnight at Dibrugarh.

Transfer from Dibrugarh to Mon. Our drive to Mon in Nagaland will be through lush green valley of the tea estates of Assam. The journey will take about 5 hours. This district is inhabited by the Konyak Tribe with a sizable number of AO Nagas. Check into Private Guest House or government circuit house on arrival. Dinner and overnight.

After early breakfast we will be going to Shangnyu village (20kms/1hr). True tradition is seen here where people are still not touched by modern ways. Lunch at the village. Meet village folk, see their way of life. Return to Mon in the evening. Dinner and overnight.

After breakfast drive to Mokokchung in the north-central Nagaland, 7 hrs drive. This district is inhabited by the AO Tribe. On reaching Mokokchung we will check into a Guest House or Government circuit house / Tourist Lodge. Dinner and overnight.

Ungma and Longkhum VILLAGE is our destination today. After breakfast set off for the villages. From here we will drive to Touphema village 5 hours away. On arrival check into some ethnic tourist cottages built in the Angami Naga style. Angami is, incidentally, the main tribe of this area. Evening traditional dance and dinner around campfire. Overnight at the huts.

After breakfast today we drive to Khonoma village (60kms/2hrs), a place renowned for its valour and courage. The Khonoma gate tells the story of British infiltration into Naga hills. We check in a hotel. Afternoon, visit the famous war cemetery, a symbolic memorial raised as citation for the supreme sacrifice made by the officers and men of the Allied forces during World War II. Come back to Kohima and to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Full day at Kohima visiting Angami villages, Like Bara Basti and Kisema. Afternoon, visit the local market. Dinner and overnight.

Today drive to Jorhat (320kms/7hrs). Overnight at a Tea Bungalow.

Today cross over to Majuli. Overnight at the tourist lodge or home stay in a village.

Half day at Majuli and return to the main land in the afternoon. Drive to Kaziranga National Park (120kms/3hrs) in the morning. Dinner and overnight.

Kaziranga National Park - is a World Heritage Site, where more than 75% of the world's total population of the great Indian One horned Rhinoceros can be found. It lies on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River and is one of the oldest parks of Assam. Besides rhinos, the Asiatic Water Buffalo numbering over 1200, elephants over 1000, tigers more than 81, Swamp deer, Barking deer and Hog deer can be seen. About 400 species of birds are found in the Park.

Early morning option to enjoy elephant ride. Later jeep safaris. Overnight.

(Kaziranga National Park is officially open for visitors from 01 November to 30 April every year. However, between May and October limited elephant ride and jeep safaris are still possible, subject to weather conditions, in the periphery of the park. Rhinos are in abundance and therefore the chances of sighting rhinos and other park animals are as good as during the official opening period of the park. Further one can explore the park by boat also.)

Day 15: A day escursion trip to Cherrapunjee (60kms/2hrs). Afternoon, sight seeing in and around the Cherrapunjee. Overnight at hotel.
