Chungthang is a small town on the confluence of the two major rivers of North Sikkim Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu (Chu stands for river). The Lachen stream from west and Lachung stream from east meets here to form Tista which is the most important river in Sikkim.

The word Lachung means "small pass". The town is approximately 125 km from the capital Gangtok.It falls under the North Sikkim and is not very far from the China border. It is at an altitude of about 3,000 metres above sea level and is located at the confluence of River Lachen and River Lachung, which are the tributaries of the Teesta River.
