On this Scotland tour, we showcase the dramatic landscapes, towering mountains and natural beauty of Scotland’s far north, fringed with golden sandy beaches and fertile green pastures. Explore the Neolithic magnificence of Orkney, and its many outstanding historic treasures including Maeshowe, where Vikings left one of the largest collections of runic inscriptions and Skara Brae, Europe’s largest prehistoric village dating back 5,000 yrs.

Day 1 : Forth Rail Bridge
Take in the spectacular views of the iconic Forth Rail Bridge, as we travel north through The Kingdom of Fife. Wander among beautiful grounds and ruins of the romantic 12th century Dunkeld Cathedral and enjoy a tranquil woodland walk to stunning Hermitage Waterfall. For lunch we will visit the picturesque highland village of Pitlochry. We then continue north through the Cairngorm National Park, to the award-winning Highland Folk Museum. If time permits you can experience the excellent Sheep Dog demonstration before making our way to the Highland capital, Inverness, for the evening.
Day 2 : Northern coastline
Today we travel north over the Kessock Bridge, following the scenic northern coastline to Dunrobin Castle, (photo stop) a spectacular fairytale castle and family seat of the Earl of Sutherland for over 700 yrs. From here we make the short drive to Carn Liath Broch, a beautifully preserved Iron Age Broch. Continuing on we follow the dramatic coastal route to John O’ Groat’s the most northerly village in the UK, (photo stop) then board the 50 mins ferry crossing over the Pentland Firth to Orkney. Arriving at St Margaret’s Hope, we cross the Churchill Barriers to visit the beautifully ornate Italian Chapel, built in World War 11 by Italian prisoners of war. We then travel on to Kirkwall the capital of Orkney, to visit the magnificent Viking St. Magnus Cathedral and the towns’ narrow cobbled streets. Overnight Kirkwall.
Day 3 : Maeshowe
A full day exploring the islands’ ancient Neolithic wonders including Maeshowe, dating back from early 3rd millennium BC with 11th and 12th AD Viking runes. Stones of Stennes, Ring of Brodger henge and stone circles dating from 3rd millennium BC. Skara Brae, Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic village dating back 5,000 yrs. Brough of Bursay, 8th-12th AD Viking settlement. Broch of Gurness dates from the 1st century BC through to the 9th century AD reflecting the long Pictish and Viking eras. There will be many more sites to visit on the day before making our way back to Kirkwall for the evening.
Day 4 : Highland town
We start with an early morning ferry crossing over the Viking Sea back to the mainland. Our journey then takes us west along the very top of Scotland, with stunning views of the Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, combined with golden sandy beaches. Passing through the pretty villages of Bettyhill and Tongue we arrive at Durness and the mysterious Smoo Caves, (Please note- the path leading to the caves are downhill and a rough path in places so appropriate footwear is recommended). Journeying south from Durness, we take our time to soak in the incredible scenery in this part of Scotland, stopping to view deep-sea lochs, endless sandy beaches and towering mountains before arriving at the beautiful whitewashed fishing village of Ullapool for the evening.
Day 5 : Loch Broom
Leaving Ullapool behind, we follow the shores of Loch Broom, to the impressive Corrieshalloch Gorge viewpoint. Its then onto Culloden Battlefield, where you can explore its fascinating story and the tragic ending to the brave Highland Jacobite’s 1745 rebellion. From here we make a stop at the evocative Clava Cairns, to view the 3,500 yr old burial cairns and stone circles, before heading to the mysterious Loch Ness, home of “ Nessie” our resident monster. Continuing on the Great Glen, we follow the shores of Loch Ness stopping to view the impressive 13th-century ruins of Urquhart Castle and the Caledonian Canal at Fort Augustus, before heading to the highland town of Fort William for the evening.
Day 6 : Our final day
Our final day and no less exciting. Firstly we head to the spectacular natural beauty of Glencoe, Scotland’s most dramatic and infamous valley. It was here, under the orders from King William in 1692, Scottish soldiers lead by Captain Robert Campbell, slaughtered 38 men, women and children of the Macdonald clan as they slept. As we leave the “ Glen of the Weeping” we descend into the unique landscape of Rannoch Moor, a vast wild tundra of heather covered moorland and peat bogs. From here we will then travel through the scenic Bridge of Orchy, mountains (photo stops along the way) to the Falls of Dochart, before making our way through the Trossachs National Park, to the imposing Stirling Castle. Here you can choose to take in the spectacular views from the castle esplanade or visit the castle from the inside and explore the grounds’ many historic buildings including the Royal Palace and The Great Hall. Leaving Stirling we then make our way to your accommodation, where we sadly say our farewells.
