The Rongai route is located eastern side of the mountain and it begins just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border through farmland and forest to several other climate zones, adding interest to the trek.
There are magnificent views over the Kenyan Plains and genuine possibilities for wildlife viewing. There is Amboseli National in the North but Tsavo East and West lay on the southern east side with a wildlife corridor which gives a chance to spot some animals.
This route normally takes 6 days, however we highly recommend 7 or 8n days to allow more time for acclimatization.

Begin your climb from the northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border.
Trek through forest and farmland to Simba Camp for your first overnight.

Continue trekking through moorland with open views of the mountain.
Arrive at Second Cave Camp for overnight.

Trek across moorland toward the dramatic Mawenzi Peak.
Arrive at Kikelewa Camp for overnight.

Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hours
Climb to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath Mawenzi Peak.
Spend the afternoon acclimatizing with optional short hikes.

Distance: 9 km | Time: 5–6 hours
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to reach Kibo Hut.
Rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Distance: 18 km | Time: 10–14 hours
Begin your summit climb at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Distance: 20 km | Time: 5–6 hours
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate.
Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha.
