Spiti Valley Circuit - Cold Desert Road Trip 7 Days

Begin the epic journey along the dangerous yet beautiful NH-22 (Old Hindustan-Tibet Road). The drive is long, passing through the verdant mountains of Kufri and Narkanda. The day ends deep in the Baspa Valley at Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border, offering breathtaking views of the Kinnaur Kailash range.

Spend the morning in the tranquil valley before driving back to Kalpa. Kalpa is famous for providing one of the most stunning, clear sunrise views of the sacred Kinnaur Kailash massif, dominating the eastern sky. Spend the afternoon visiting the local temples and the large apple orchards in the area, a vital part of Kinnaur's economy.

A long, challenging drive takes you into the Cold Desert region. The route passes through the infamous Mallik Nullah and the ancient village of Nako, offering the first glimpses of the arid, moon-like landscapes. We cross the treacherous, dramatic riverbed sections before reaching the heart of Spiti Valley, the small town of Kaza, for the overnight stay.

Dedicate the day to exploring the iconic high-altitude villages. Visit the magnificent 1000-year-old Key Monastery, perched dramatically on a hilltop. Drive to Komic (Asia's highest village) and Langza, famous for its enormous Buddha statue and abundant marine fossils, immersing yourself in the unique culture of Spiti.

Drive over the stunning Kunzum Pass (4590m), the gateway to Lahaul, and pay respects at the temple there. The route descends into the Chandra Valley, leading to the jewel of the Lahaul-Spiti circuit, the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake. Camp nearby and enjoy the breathtaking sunset and starlit sky over the lake.

Start the long, scenic drive early. The route is often rough, following the Chandra River. After crossing the tunnel or the seasonal Rohtang Pass (depending on the route/time of year), the landscape dramatically changes back to the lush, green Kullu Valley. Arrive in Manali, concluding the high-altitude Spiti circuit.

Spend the morning relaxing in Manali, perhaps visiting the serene Vashisht Hot Springs or shopping for local handicrafts. Be transferred to the Manali bus stand or onwards to Bhuntar Airport for your journey, having successfully completed one of the most rugged and rewarding road trips in the Indian Himalayas.
