Mount Meru, located in Arusha National Park, is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). Known for its breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes, Mount Meru is often considered a more technical yet rewarding climb compared to its famous neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro. The 4-day trek offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of nature, fantastic vistas, and the thrill of climbing a diverse volcanic landscape.
After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to Arusha. Here, you can prepare for your trek. Your guide will give you a briefing about the trek, and you’ll have a chance to check your gear. Later, you will drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park (approximately 1-hour drive). Complete the park registration process and begin your trek.
Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles)
Altitude: Start at 1,500 m (4,920 ft) to 2,514 m (8,250 ft) at Miriakamba Hut
Highlights: Watch for wildlife such as giraffes, buffalos, and various bird species along the trail.
Once you arrive at Miriakamba Hut, settle into your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day’s trek.
After breakfast, you’ll set off from Miriakamba Hut towards Saddle Camp. This day is characterized by a gradual ascent through lush forests and moorlands, with occasional views of the imposing Meru crater.
Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles)
Altitude: From 2,514 m (8,250 ft) to 3,550 m (11,645 ft) at Saddle Camp
Highlights: The scenery continues to evolve, and you might spot some wildlife along the route, along with stunning vistas as you approach the saddle area.
Once you arrive at Saddle Camp, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, you may take a short hike to acclimatize and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape and the striking Meru crater. Enjoy dinner at the camp and rest up for the summit attempt.
You will rise early for the summit attempt. After a light breakfast, you’ll begin your trek to the summit of Mount Meru, typically starting around 2:00 AM.
Trekking Duration: 8-10 hours (round trip to summit)
Distance: Approximately 10-12 kilometers (6-7.5 miles) round trip
Altitude: From 3,550 m (11,645 ft) to 4,566 m (14,980 ft) at the summit
Highlights: The trail is steep and may involve some scrambles, especially near the top. The exhilaration of witnessing the sunrise over Kilimanjaro and the rugged landscape of Mount Meru is a breathtaking experience.
After taking in the views at the summit, you will begin your descent back to Saddle Camp. Have a meal and rest, then continue your journey down to Miriakamba Hut.
After breakfast, you will hike from Miriakamba Hut back to Momella Gate.
Trekking Duration: 3-4 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles)
Altitude: Descend from 2,514 m (8,250 ft) to 1,500 m (4,920 ft) at Momella Gate
Highlights: As you descend, enjoy the lush vegetation, sounds of nature, and possibly spot some wildlife.
Once at the gate, you will complete your park exit formalities, receive your summit certificates, and enjoy a celebratory lunch. Afterward, you will be transferred back to Arusha for relaxation or onward travel arrangements.
